Who is the winner?
hi guys, got some speakers in mind but due to the tight work schedule i'm unable to have th etime to audit them.
currently i'm using cd5/nait5/cresta2. have some dought to spend on a more decent speaker - i'm working towards a more balance system for my cd5/nait5/ speaker.
over here - i could get this 2 deals.
1. 2 months old quad 11L ($600)
2. new rega ara ($850)
which would u choose??
1. don't change any.
2. quad 11L
3. rega ara
4. yr choice of speaker (budget ard $850)
5. others

The Ara is a fun speaker and a nice step up from the KEFs IMO.
How's the 2nd hand market in Sg? If you can, track down a pair of Rega Kytes. A superior speaker at a fraction of the price.
I had a recent Kyte escapade at
the pinkfish forum.

hi mike,
sad to say the market for rega speaker is not very good. that is part of the reasons why i'm still hesitating in getting the rega speaker. its very still over here. hard to find a s/h pair & diffcult to get it sell off when i move to a bigger apartment early next year or year end depends.
my goal for my setup is a pretty balance one.
cd5
nait5 ('perhaps' upgrade to pre power when the newer series arrive)
flatcap2 (getting it year end)
nat05 (or newer series depend early next year)
rega ela (getting it mid next year)
what do you think guys??

Is Quad 11L ported?
Posted on: 05 August 2002 by maserluv
hi ANOpax,
the quad 11L new is retailing at $790, the s/h is selling for $600 so abit steep in the price though it's only 2 months old with manual/box/receipt still intact. btw the color is bird eye, nice but i prefer the piano black.
headache now
my head tell me to get the quad but my heart goes to rega ara.

Wayne,
Why wait till next year for a pair of ELAs.
I got a pair of ELA's in Sgp about two years ago for ard $850.
I also owned a pair in Australia that I used with a Nait1 with a rotel CDP and a Linn Axis. I spend years listening to that system.
The last time was in the Adelphi the Rega dealer had a pair of ELAs left. Have a look he might still have them.
I haven't tried to sell mine so I don't know what the resell market is like. There do seem to be a _lot_ of s/h SBLs coming on the market at the moment though, but they start at sgd2k.
cheers
Gus

Just to say (perhaps unhelpfully in your case) that the Kytes really are VERY good. I recently flogged a pair to a Forum member, which were sitting relatively unused as an extension pair to my kitchen. I got them down (they've been on Rega brackets high on the walls for the last few years - not hi-fi but hey, this is a kitchen!) and took the opportunity to slot them into my main system, which has changed considerably over the last year - I was truly gobsmacked! They were absolutely superb. You could argue that anything would be on the end of CDS/52/250 etc but the mid and top end were almost as satisfying as my Arcs for a tiny fraction of the price. Very transparent, spacious, informative, atmospheric. Super for less than 100 quid. I was sorry I'd agreed to sell them. They don't do bass but what does given those dimensions?
Just an onservation.

I know how you feel. I initally ordered them for a friend's mini system so we wouldn't have to suffer from dodgy Denon speakers.
Imagine my embarrasment when I reneged on the offer.

hi gusi,
i have to wait till i move over to my new apartment before i would get the ela floorstander. my dad was kinda mad when he always myself repositioning my old horn speakers in my room. He don't like the idea of me playing around with floorstander till i move over to the new apartment - will have transportation problem shifting everything to my new apartment.
thus - the only way to play with speaker is to get a decent bookshelf at the moment. but i dunno whether the dealer will wanna trade-in the rega ara for the ela if i would to get from him at this point of time.
heheee maybe josephR might wanna ask his neighbour for me.![smile](/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)
c'mon guys - give me more ideas![smile](/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)

Wayne,
I understand your situation now. Why not ask the Rega dealer about a future trade-in for the Elas. I am sure his pair have been in the shop for at least two years and he should be happy to sell them.
I haven't had bookshelf speakers myself so I can't advise you on those. I did see a number of bookshelf speakers in the Rega shop, you could just ask if there is a deal for you there.
On the other hand if you can live with your system till next year, you could just save for a few more months and have a wider choice. It just doesn't make sense to buy new speakers now and upgrade them in 8 months time. You're bound to loose some money on them.
Otherwise why not try to bargain on the Quads. Hey, we live in S, right? You should be able to get a better price.
So there you go, 3 easy options:
1) Make a deal with the Rega dealer on Aras now, Elas next year.
2) Bargain the Quads down now. Sell them next year if you like the Elas more.
3) Buy nothing now and have a bigger budget next year. (Just make sure you don't blow all your savings on other toys)
cheers

Elas are not that fussy about positioning. Rega advise around 20cm from rear walls, and about 1m from side walls for my Naos (Ela's big brother).
Experiment by placing them 20cm from the rear wall. If this sounds boomy and vocals sound cupped, then move the speakers further into the room.
There are no hard and fast rules given that each room sounds different. My speakers are at 60 cm from the rear wall.
Regards,
Steve.

yo silk,
the next step for me is the flatcap 2. i think i need to give the nait 5 a boast in performance first before i will go to the dark side.
* yo guys till now my setup goes like this -
1. luxman t-1 tuner
2. cd5
3. nait5
4. rega ela mk2a
im used to listen to fm station every night, so much so than the cds.... radio is my piority in terms of music listen....
what is the next better route for me to enjoy the best of radio music in terms of musical enjoyments??
1. change the existing luxman tuner to the nat05?
2. add a flatcap02?
*the luxman t-01 is an antique, very fine instrument though i couldnt do a A/B test with the nat05.... any guys got any clue??

Wayne,
Congrats on the Elas and happy listening!
I always had mine flush to the back wall but you just have to see what works for you. Luckily they are quite small and easy to shift.
The closer to the back wall you put the speakers the more bass you get. I thought the rear ports are meant to bounce the bass off the back wall.
I haven't heard the NAT05 so I can't comment on it. The forum seems pretty positive about Naim tuners though.
cheers

hi gusi,
thanks for the recommendation of the ela!!!
for me, i place the ela out about 50 cm from rear wall, it give the room filling effect. guess my room is damn small, i cant even shift less than 20 cm towards the rear wall - boom!!!
alright - guess have to wait for some kind guys that have encounter with the luxman T-01 & nat05 tuner to provide me with his valuable advice.
cheers - back to music![smile](/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif)
