Sistem pics 2003

Posted by: Steve Toy on 14 January 2003

Here are a few crappy pics. I've got some of Stallion's rig too, but I await his permission to post them.

I need to get the file size down. I see that we now get 50k Smile

Regards,

Steve.

If your end is not looking too good I suggest a visit to the doc's.

Wow, those Naos just disappear, and those Densens, virtually invisibl2e.

It's taking too long to upload. This connection is really sh#te, and the files may still be too big.

Last time Mike Sae kindly got them down to size.

Regards,

Steve.

The LP12 sits upon an archi-dee stand, which guessing by the fact the deck feet fit exactly was made for an LP12, the rest is on Ash Designs, a nice quality rack with big slabs of heavy glass, the front being cherry veneer and the rest metal of some kind.

Can't comment on sound deifferences quality as they all sound the same to me, ash looks nice though (not as nice as fraim, but no lottery wins this year I am afraid!)

Steven,

As Vuk would have said, ditch the flash and get a tripod!

Or try taking a pic from a slight angle rather than head on to reduce those reflections.

I spy a Rega Ear in there

What cans are you running off that? Please say Sennheiser (or I suppose some Grados aren't bad).

Well spotted! It is a Rega Ear Mk 1. The Mk 2 is a silver thingy.

My cans are Senn HD600s.

A coconut for the person who can correctly identify the interconnects into the Ear.

Steve.

PS: Let's see some more members' sistem pics.

The latest EAR can be ordered in black or silver. It looks different in that it's rectangular rather than the rather weird looking pentangle you have.

Frank.

Steven,

You have amanged to capture all the disadvatages of flash without actually making your picture any lighter.

"Please, Mr Toy listen to me! Find some lights"

He doesn't need lights as he's got a flash. He needs to be able to use his camera properly.

Alex,

It's a Nato5 tuna.

Is that an earth loop I can hear or Ansel Adams spinning in his grave?

Black boxes against a light background are very hard to capture - you have picked a subject mix that often beats the best of the camera's automatic exposure systems. Best of luck. Smile

the problem in those pics is not a question of flash per se, it's a question of the type of lighting applied to the kit.
given that with shiny objects, the more diffused the source the better unless you specifically want the highlight, try diffusing your flash by putting some translucent material (white toilet paper if you must...) in front of it, and the result should already be better.
yes, it will reduce the output from the flash, but given that the light is measured through the lens, the flash will emit a longer (which equates to more powerful) strobe, and therefore compensate.
as soon as you eliminate the point source, you'll get rid of the glare.
of course, the ideal is to either balance flash and ambient, which can be tough if your camera can't be overridden.

with flash exposure, you're controlling the flash with your aperture, and the background with your exposure speed, so this is, indeed, a case for "small aperture (the higher numbers...), slow shutter speed (to compensate the small aperture) and some flash to fill in and light the boxes.

another worthwile note is that the usual slow-speed mantra of 1/focal lenght does not apply to most of the small digicams because of the way the shutter is layed out, being central, which makes no noise and virtually no vibrations vs film plane, which makes more noise and shakes the rest of the body more.

you should be able to shoot a reasonably sharp image at something like 1/2 a second without too much trouble, unless you've got parkinsons or have just spent your day drinking coffee.

and if you're not sure how to stabilise your camera and don't have a tripod, put it on a chair or another stable platform, force the flash off, hit the timer function, stop touching it and wait until it takes the picture.
