Sistem pics 2003

Posted by: Steve Toy on 14 January 2003

Here are a few crappy pics. I've got some of Stallion's rig too, but I await his permission to post them.

I need to get the file size down. I see that we now get 50k Smile

Regards,

Steve.

Mine is the ittok 2, the klyde is a good cart, however I did have a brief fling with an xx-1 before it died, so I am missing that a bit.

Steve, Marco,

I'm sorry I'm unable to post pictures of my sistem. Problem is we don't have a camera (well, Rosie's got an old Leica that broke down the minute she tried to take a picture of me - guess why...).

The funny thing about my stand, Stally, is that SolidSteel is Italian. How about that?

don't have a scanner either, dribbly man. You want me to change my entire life because of this thread?

How did you get your outer platter so nice and shiny? Mine is like me, somewhat long in the tooth and dull.

Steven

Agreed. I like the pictures; I cannot comment on quality or otherwise because I cannot post any myself. But I like them.

I think the premise of the thread is pretty cool and the fact that it has had over ten thousand viewings in about a week speaks volumes.

Regards

Mike

Looks great. I think I might just want to go for a LP12 in my next upgrade.

Off course, you may prefer the leaner faster sound of the olive model, so you have to make up your own mind.

yup, Mick has it right.

Much of this difference is down to the transformers, which were changed around the time of the olive cases.

I suspect, too, that the newer 135s are more demanding of what's fed into them.

Nick,

interesting point there.

Sometimes it's not easy to get a good picture in 30KB, so it's good to see that the limit has been raised to 50KB.

cheers, Martin

Nice pics Matthew Smile

There's a lot of Quadraspire going on there. An upgrade to the Ref. version should see you grinning big time.

You could start with the decoupled rods, and the "runt" shelves.

Steve.

Why do your power supplies have to face the wall. Have they been misbehaving?

malcolm

p.s you'll find that buying some speakers will help your system sound more involving

And why do they call you a Pinko when you're all White?
Posted on: 21 January 2003 by matthewr
You can't really tell in the picture that's not standard Quadraspire but has a number of prototype parts a friend is working on.

The rods are the extra light Titanium rods with the these difficult to describe "viscous" decoupling inserts where they intersect the shelves. The shelves may look solid but the majority of the mass is drilled out from underneath and replaced with some kind of hard setting epoxy rasin -- overall the effect is much the same as the "bog seat" but this mod retains all the conventional advantages of shelving.

Malcolm said "Why do your power supplies have to face the wall. Have they been misbehaving?"

Wink

Actually there were a few cable dressing tricks that are only possibly in this configuration.

Peter,

Becuase of where the kit is installed the rack with the power amps and PSUs are on the left of rack with the CDP and preamp. Ideally with Naim you want it the other way around as the physical layout of the cases means its easier to keep power leads away from the signal leads. Rotating the second rack though 90 degrees solves this -- if you look at the picture you can see all the power leads going off to the left well away from the interconnects. In fact I managed to arrange the system so that no leads crossed or touched as all.

Another advantage is that this configuration allows for greater distance between PSUs and power amps and CDP/preamp without taking up as much room as simply spreading them as far apart as possible (which, becuase of cable reach issues, is actually not very far if you have the CDP on the right ).

BTW The racks are no longer in this configuration as it looked really stupid and frankly friends and family were beginning to think I'd gone a bit weird. The final straw came when I invited a young woman over to view my etchings and the obvious ridiculousness of my hi-fi led to having to reveal my Geekdom rather earlier in the relationship than I would have liked.

Comfs Matthew ...

Maybe you need to find a woman who is an electrical engineer or something of that ilk.

My wife does logistics and quite likes it all. Interestingly she preferred the upgrade to 72/Hi more than the 140/135s. Even she, however, is not keen on the visual proerties of mana but came out with the comment 'well you wouldn't buy a car just because it looks good now'.

Well lets wait and see what the budget holds later in the year. I'll see if I can get some photos for you but it will have to come out of the stand budget Smile

Mike, the shiney platter is the result of doing exactly what Linn say not too, polishing with brasso!
