Where to start with the Porcupine Tree?

Posted by: GaryP on 03 April 2010

Can anybody offer me any recommendations on where to start with the Porcupine Tree?

Voyage 34 used to appear a lot on here, and there were some references to similarities with DSOTM which I thought sounded promising.

But now a lot of other albums are popping up?

Thx
Gary

apye!

The vinyl PT albums i have are:

The Incident
Lightbulb Sun
Fear Of A Blank Plannet
Up The Downstair
Voyage 34
The Sunday Of Life
Skyline

...and i also have:

Insurgentes
No-Man ((Speak))

The only one i don't like is We Lost The Skyline because it's live with an hysterical crowd screaming too LOUD too often. What they're screaming at i don't know, only when they stop screaming do you get to hear a bloke strumming a guitar and singing, and i don't know who this busker is (but he's not too bad actually).
I think this album is for cult hard core fans who love screamy gob-shout audiences but I’m not sure.

So i am not at all impressed : (

However, my other PT albums are fine, and Insurgentes is absolutely Brilliant... Buy it with confidence! ; )

That is indeed remarkable. A true labour of love, as they say.

Thanks for the reply Debs,

Looks like I will be getting 'The Incident' & 'Insurgentes' next then.

Anybody ordered from burning shed before?
What are they like, what is their delivery time?

Thanks,

Andy.

Burning Shed are fine. They have been pretty quick when I ordered.

Bottom line here is you will end up buying them all, so you might as well just get on with it!

Insurgentes was not such an immediate album for many of us for some strange reason - it took a few listens but now I really like it.

Played my 10 inch special edition vinyl for the first time last night.

I have had 2 copies of Up the Downstair, and they are both flawed, mind you they sent a replacement and didn't ask for the first one to be returned.

As the website informs - Burning Shed run by artists for artists.

Even though I could pay less elseware, I prefer to support the many artists on the BS store.

Delivery for me is usually Two days after receiving e-mail shipping date. Burning Shed is a people oriented company who care about the artists they represent and the customers who buy the music. Customer Service is first class and like Naim, they treat people with respect and are rewarded with loyalty.

Is it worth me slipping in 'On The Sunday Of Life'
Limited Edition (2000 copies) double 180 gram heavy-weight orange coloured vinyl
with my order?

A short quick answer imo is... Yes! : )

A longer answer imo is...

Apparently, most PT album fans consider On the Sunday of Life to be a bit of an 'also-ran', not bad, and not brilliant.
But I liked it from the 1st play, every track is very different, a change in tempo, mood, and all rather contrastingly so, yet it still manages to flow though as an album. imho it gets better as you go though, calm peaceful interludes are followed up by fast trippy, and hypnotic tracks, but it slows often, (need to catch your breath perhaps) some 'spoken' tracks, the voice of a god is on it too (yes really!) and it just gets plain weird quite a lot too which is okay by me : )

Other thoughts...

This album needs a well tempered audio set up for it to get proper high with... parts of my system are suffering from LSD (Lotsof Service Deficiency) and so not doing this album justice : (

I have some reservations on my bright orange vinyl quality, (some slight crackle on quieter parts). It's still worth buying this limited edition vinyl imho (yours maybe okay) but i wouldn't mind getting On The Sunday Of Life on cd as well just to hear a 'clean' version for those tranquil parts... if you know what i mean ; )

Burning Shed: A very good mail order service, arrives by Royal Mail 2nd Class service 2 - 3 working days and wrapped very securely in a very strong cardboard packet! ...1st Class postage would only be one day quicker but at much greater postage cost because of the vinyl weight, so 2nd Class is actually best.

Thanks for the detailed reply Debs.

I think I will risk it and give it a try. I am interested to hear their earlier stuff as well (I enjoy Up The Downstair, which is also on coloured vinyl and has some crackles).

I should get a good contrast ordering The Incident & Insurgentes as well.

Thanks again,

Andy.
