Look what fell out of my Hi-Cap today - suggestions please?

Posted by: HTK on 31 May 2003

Bought a refurb Hi-Cap this week and on unpacking it was a rattler.

Took off the case today and look what fell out:

The HiCap seems to work fine and brings the expected sonic improvement to my CD5 (and then some!).

I have been all over the (beautifully finished and brand new looking) interior with a bright light and big magnifying glass. For the life of me I simply cannot see where this component could have come from. There is no evidence that this has snapped off from anywhere and let's face it, the inside of a Hi-Cap ain't exactly unfathomable.

I believe that this is an artifact which fell in the box at the factory, or perhaps an old component removed during the refurb which didn't want to be parted from its friends.

So I've either got a nice little (if unwanted) pressie from Naim, I've been unlucky, or their equipment is built like rubbish. I'm going for the former because the Hi-Cap is obviously working well.

Is this foolish?

Cheers

It`s probably that:
" perhaps an old component removed during the refurb which didn't want to be parted from its friends."
This one has been replaced by one of the blue ones.
Enjoy your "new" hicap.

Thanks fellas.

There are indeed two scrummy new blue ones in there (or was it more? I can't remember). With the exception of the transformer, everything looks brand spanking new. This has got to be the most cost effective upgrade in my long quest for better sounds. And some people think Naim gear is too expensive. Pah!

Anyway, thanks again for the reassurance and if NAIGAIM can spare the time, please tell me what a "booger" is?

Cheers

So, what's "booger" in the Queen's English?

Its dried bit of nose stuff you find in the morning.

Sometimes refered to as a cornflake

Harry,

Try counting backwards from 10. If you can't, it could be your brain.

Either that or your heart. Have you gone blue/black and smelly and are you covered in blowflies ?

Harry,

If you post a pic of the regulator section (the board with the two large metal-canned devices on it) I can tell you if anything is missing.

It does look like an old Tantalum that got lonely though Wink

Ah the joys of the Internet. I'm learning to speak american - and all from the comfort of my own home.

Thanks for the offer Andy. I should of photographed it when I had the case off. Think I'll just kick back and listen to it because it sounds like this is a harmless artefact.

Thanks again all.

Blue ones, red ones - what next?

I've got blue ones in my 8 year old hi-cap (which has just gone in for service). I wonder what colour the new ones will be.. Wink

Bonus pic for the really perverse:

Steve,
Has it been serviced by Naim?

Emmanuel,

It's being serviced presently. I took these pics the day before I took the Hi-cap into Naim HQ. Missing the chunky fella already <sob, sniffle>

Thinking back to last Saturday when I had the case off, the innards in the above picture tally with what I saw - although I think my "blue ones" were taller and fatter (why didn't I just type "bigger"?!). My HiCap was refurbed by Naim last month.

Sorry to keep stating the bleedin' obvious, but I'm just so knocked out by the sonic improvement resulting from this £315 upgrade that I can't seem to stop going on about it. I'll be stopping people in the street next....

Cheers

God, I have been looking all over for that cap. I couldn't remember where I had left it.

So which units sounds better, with red caps or with blue caps?
