Grandad, by Clive Dunn. With the "wonder" bit being that there weren't any followups, not that it got to #1...

Pete.

Men at work? men at work?

They were certainly not one-hit-wonders! Strings of singles, with the follow-up album doing rather nicely thankyou in the USA to boot. cool

Downunder was certianly global - I recall wandering down a street in Mexico City, hearing it on a radio strung up in a rubber tree as I passed by.

Rico - ok, the Kans are sorted, now whatabout the rainforests?

well what about M then. They had a hit with 'That's the way the money goes' and I think one other minor hit ... certainly not one hit wonders !!!

Nena: 99 Luftbalons (sp?)

Thanks for the Hot Buttered Popcorn reference; that song stil resonates in my head, I'm sorry to say.

I believe that it also capped off the first music video - I still recall watching on a public television channel a video that someone made to that song. It had to with cubes instantly appearing, disappearing, and moving around to the tune. Cool stuff when you're all of seven years old.

Cheers

Keith.

Just 99 Luftballons ? A hard judgment IMO, being of german culture (among others ) I remember of her enormous success that still lasted for 3-4 years before troubles in the band as well as Nena's mothership put an end to it. Read it in the yellow press big grin

I still have the 45rpm and listened to it recently. I was also a fan of the song back then - nowadays, that odd synth sounds silly, but I still have to find another melody that hits your ears that rapidly.

Another poor bloke is Scott McKenzie - ever heard anything since "San Francisco"?

Cheese - may all beings be happy smile

...or perhaps we could also start another thread on

Who we would prefer to be one hit wonders ! smile

She had a kinda semi hit in 97 with legend of a cowgirl.

a resonable album but the recording is harsh.

I really liked that song.

"Your Systems Lame if it aint on a Fraim"

...Zaeger and Evans(?)

That one by the Honeycombs in the sixties " Have I the right to hold you....(Chorus) Step right back I just can't bear it, I have my love and I want to share it.." to a stunning drum beat - I liked that one!

cheers

Stranded - The Saints
Los Ninos Del Parque - Liaisons Dangereuses

Wow, I've got all of them!

I would have rated Shack Up (the A side of the 12") as a bigger hit for ACR though! Both Josef K's The only fun in town and The Fire Engines Lubricate your living room albums really are amongst my favourites from that time period, and those early ACR 12" are great (I have Shack Up, The fox, and Knife Slits Water plus the first three albums).

Jilted John by Jilted John

Gordon continues to be a moron.....

And John Shuttleworth is great for confusing Americans (the words to Austin Ambassedor Y-reg all mean something individually in the US, but not togther in the order John uses them. This is, of course, wonderful.)

Chaps

My nominations are :-

Scott McKensie singing San Fransico..........a nice song depicting a nice era.

Terry by Twinkle....saw her live at Swindon and she was crap and I mean really really crap. But it was a pleasant little song.

Grocer Jack by a Teenage Opera.....rather tacky but nice.

The Pushbike Song - The Mixtures?

A Glass of Champagne - Sailor?

Though thinking about it - how'bout

In a Broken Dream - Python Lee Jackson

or

When I'm Dead and Gone - Mcguinness Flint?

OR possibly the greatest one hit wonder of all time

Spirit in the Sky - Norman Greenbaum?

BTW Mick - Excerpts from a Teenage Opera was by Keith West (I think) -- nice one
