XLR or Din

I have read in many places that the Din plug is superior to the XLR connector, certainly to the casual observer a good quality, say Neutrik XLR gold plated plug - socket assembly looks better than the similar manufactures Din device.
I have also read that Julian was quoted that the reason for XLR choice on the NAP-250 was to do with tax issues in the early days and the NAP-135 just followed.
Have NAIM continued with this apparent compromise with units of the calibre of the NAP-500 and NAP-300 etc. or have NAIM discovered that the XLR is a superior connector.
