Apple tv + Supernait

Posted by: Rich27 on 21 July 2009

Hi all,

I currently do most of my listening with my Apple tv hooked up to the Supernait via optical digital. Every so often when switching back to Aux 1 (for the Apple tv) a horrible noise comes out of the speakers, which can only be described as a kind of helicopter rotor type noise. This is v. scary and continues until I take some action to reset the Apple tv or switch input. My Questions are:

1) Any idea what causes this strange noise?
2) Will it cause any damage to the loudspeakers?

I use my SN for TV in addition to my kit. I never have the TV plugs into AUX when playing music. When I switch to AUX to watch TV there is some level of noise, now present, which is not there where on my music source. I have always thought that this was a grounding issue due to the TV/cable etc... and I have not been able to identify the exact point to eliminate the issue.

Mine is a low level noise that you cannot hear with the TV volume on. This is not worrisome, just bothersome.

In your case it appears you have a much larger issue. You might want to try using a grounding plug for your ATV and see if that eliminates the problem and it may be coming from the TV as well.

I'm now wondering since you also have a SN, if there is something with the AUX port in the SN that causes this to occur?

Perhaps you might want to contact Naim technical support an ask and post their answer.

I don't think it can be a grounding issue as the Apple tv is only connected with an optical cable and therefore not electrically connected in any way. Has only happened on two or three occassions so I assume something to do withe the output from the Apple tv rather than anything else, still a bit baffling however.

Mainly worried if I could have damaged the speaker in some way!!

I'd still contact Naim as this shouldn't happen. If the nosie is loud enough then yes there is the potential for speaker damage.

I also get it when I feed a 5.1 signal out of it through a stereo DAC.
I suspect it's related.

I hear the exact same noise with my Apple tv. I have the ATV connected to a seperate dac. When the ATV is rebooted you can hear a loud clicking noise through the loudspeakers, and I don't think they are good for the speakers. When I select a song through the ipod remote the sound is gone.
So this problem lies in the Apple tv and not with Naim, as I experience the same problem with a second party dac. When I leave the house I switch my Naim preamp to the cd input to avoid that the Apple tv produces this noise and I'm not there to stop it.

As Nap-ster says this is the Dolby Digital output from the Apple TV. Use the setup menu to set the Dolby output off,

Thanks! It's in Settings, Audio&Video. There Dolby digital Out was on.

Yes its not the appletv or indeed the mini, or at leas they are not making a 'mistake'

I believe the SN only excepts PCM stereo, 5.1 would confuse it.
