Advice - newbie to Naim

Posted by: pac on 05 August 2002

My first post so pls excuse my level of ignorance!

I'd like to gain from the wisdom & experience of other Naim owners.

My current setup includes:

Linn Katans
Quad 34 controller
Quad 405-2 amp
CD source (not worth mentioning!)

I have had the chance to demo some of the series 5 and have been well impressed with the soundstage & detail coming from a pair of Katans. I've seen here that other members have had good results using the Katans. At present, my financial resources are limited, so I am focusing on previously owned kit.

I'd be interested in hearing from other members on recommendations of potential beginning Naim components. I'm also curious to learn to what extent it is possible to combine Naim/Linn with good results.

Special thanks in advance!

Mr Pac

Step 1. Flog off your kit except the speakers.

Step 2 Buy a knackered 32.5 and 140. This is a pre and power amp, should cost about £500.

Step 3 Send or take to Naim to re service to as new condition cost £250 ish

Step 4 Buy good CD3.5 cost about £600 ish

Step 5 Connect up and play.

That little lot combined with your speakers will blow 95% of the other systems off this earth.

Good Luck

Regards

Mick

pac,

the NAIT5, NAC112 & NAP150 are relatively new models with a subtly different sound to the older stuff.

You may find that the other stuff in the range doesn't do that same things for you.

Strangely, I'd suggest that 32.5's & other older gear with the silver surrounds (not the later all-black fascias) might offer what you're looking for.

cheers, Martin

Thank you to senior members Parry & Payne for the recommendations. Very much appreciated!

Also special thanks to all the other forum members who wanted to sell me their used kit!
