Nerdy Dan question
Posted by: Peter Stockwell on 21 January 2004
I like Steely Dan, I have the box CD seet for 1993. I also have 'Countdown to Ecstacy' on vinyl which, while it sounds more fluid on LP, doesn't better the adequate sound of the CDs.
What are the definitive editions of the first two Steely Dan almbums, either on CD or preferrably on vinyl ?

The 1999 reissues. They should be readily available!

Chris is right w.r.t to CD. The 99 re-issues are loads better than previous cd versions. You will know you have the right ones if the album title is shown at the back face of the hinge spine and there are a lot of recently written liner notes from Df and WB.
As an aside IMO a good pressing on a good deck still shows the latest CD remasters a clean pair of heals.

Hi Peter
I'm an avid 'Dan' fan and have some of the early albums on Japanese vinyl.
I've also recently aquired Japanese manufactured CD's of the latest reissues and they are well worth having if you want the best.
I'm slowly collecting a few of my faves as Jap CD's as they ALWAYS sound better.
I use:-
www.101cd.com
UK based company with 'all inclusive' prices. Select an artiste, then click on the Japanese flag to see what's available.
Good luck.

I've seen their site. Unfortunately, where I live buying from the UK is royal pain. i've lost count of the number of packages from the UK that have never arrived. It's got to be almost in double figures now. So I don't buy anything, involving postal services, from the UK anymore.

I don't doubt it, I went to the trouble of getting an ABC pressing of Countdown, and while it's more fluid for want of a better word than my CDs it's cut in such a way as to have a very light tonal balance. The CD box set I have hasz better frequency balance, but sounds more mechanical.

With vinyl you are mostly at the mercy of the second hand market and I have found so much variability w.r.t quality. To give you an indication of the kind of nerd I am I now have five vinyl royal scams and four aja's, three can't buy a trills, two pretzel logics, two guacho's, three countdown's and three katy lied! They all cost less than a few quid at car boot sales etc and I don't mind spending on the hunt for the elusive 'ultimate pressing'. what my quest has shown is the HUGE variability, both in vinyl condition as well as original pressing quality.
My original UK aja on gatefold betters every other copy except for my brothers linn select copy(bastard!).
My best Royal scam is a mid eighties uk edition, better than any us version for some surprising reason. The french pressing seems off in speed and pitch. The £17 simply vinyl is a total waste of space - absolutely no dynamics to speak of. I think it might have been takeb from a CD - if so they should make this info known on the sleeve.
So in my opinion, with a band as f.....g great as these then a few quid spent on looking for pressings to do the music full justice is no big deal. As a bonus you get to find clear red vinyl canadian aja pressings!

'The £17 simply vinyl is a total waste of space - absolutely no dynamics to speak of. '
I found this with their 'Moondance', which is one reason why I stopped bothering with 'audiophile' LP reissues.
My late-1970s US Scam is better than my 1976 UK one though. And I still prefer the 1999 CD - now I have the XPS2!

Warning! Simply Vinyl are not to be considered an audiophile reissue company. They do not use the best availabale masters. They package nicely and press on 180g vinyl, but there's no guarantee on the origin ofthe master tape.
I'll be looking into the Dab CD reissues, in themeantime if I see someDan going cheap I'm going to have another try at the vinyl.
Thanks
Peter
