But you get Monty Python.

And you have Bush as President.

You must get irony...Socratic irony at least?

Dear Melnobone,

Some people from the US don't "get" irony, as simple as that, and where anyone else can see it in them, they just think they are right, and not being ironic [or the subject of an ironic situation] at all. This is why others think they are both irritating and arrogant. The longer they persist in not seeing it in themselves, the more they will be disliked.

Not all US Americans are like this of course, but quite enough to elect [not, I suspect, quite the "right terminology" first time round anyway] GW Bush, and even have thoughts of letting Arnnie S run, with the necessary change in the constitution!

The US is big on irony alright.

Kindest regards from Fredrik

Fredrik,

Not so much irony there as insanity.

But I am wrong, we do appreciate irony (though of a slightly different sort) in the American South. No doubt since I've moved from there, these ten odd years, I've lost all of mine ! Smile

It is equally true to say that Britain saved the US from Nazi tyranny. The US stood back and let Britain and Germany slug it out until both were on the ropes then it joined in when it could profit most and lose least. The US joined in the war for one reason and one reason only - it could profit from it.

quote:
Thank for Lend Lease and the Marshall Plan which helped us rebuild all of Western Europe and made it the envy of ALL the world.

Britain has only just finished repaying its loan to the US but it was all the conditions the US made for the loan that was so crippling for the UK - we were hardly better treated by America after the war than Germany was. The so called 'special relationship' is a myth. As one US official said recently on a British TV documentary about US war aid to Britain in WW2 'America does not have friends, it has interests'.

quote:
Thank you for keeping our democracy safe so's we don't have to speak Russian and grandma doesn't have to spend her retirement working on a collective farm.

The 'Russian threat' was greatly exaggerated by the US propaganda machine.

quote:

But most of all America we thank you for letting us keep our culture customs and language as we want and not imposing yours on ours.

LOL Have you ever been to the UK the 51st state?

quote:
Oh, and by the way, thank you for inventing rock and roll, without which, life as we know it would be impossible

Only if one is addicted to junk culture.

You invented rock'n'roll.

We refined it.

You had grapes and made vinegar.

We had grapes and made wine.

Pfffffff...

Well Menlobone, that's a mighty interesting statement. Let's see:

Buddy Holly
James Brown
The Supremes
Chuck Berry
Bo Diddley
Dylan
The Beach Boys

Which of those pre British invasion do you consider vinegar. Most ? All ?

Me, I like my grapes straight up. Thanks. Smile

Straight up where? lol...

The Beach Boys?

Dylan...ok acoustic...went electric here...

OK here goes. Half a dozen to start

Rolling Stones
Beatles
Led Zeppelin
The Kinks
The Clash
Pink Floyd

Seems we have about one fifth of the population but twice the talent.

Oh and the best hifi to play it on...

The US never did declare war on the Nazis, AIUI. Russia had at least as large a part to play in the 1940-45 war.

The UK has just - JUST - repaid the last of the loan to the US. You also got some prime bases such as Diego Garcia in return for clapped-out destroyers.

You know, we could have just done a Roman on your ass and enslaved the lot of you when we had the bomb after WW2.

You reckon you could have beaten the Nazis, Sovs and British Empire?

Its easy to make cheap jibes, isn't it?

Yeah but they did give us a million rounds of ammunition in return for the jet engine! Hang on that can't be right...that would make the US the most crass exploiting users in the history of crass exploiting users.

Yes, and a good bit of fun. Provided you have a sense of humor.

I think the UK could duff the US up. A group of us did a military appreciation of how to do it once. It would be a unconventional attack but very doable. Razz

As Dubya once said..." Bring' em on.." Smile
Posted on: 08 May 2007 by acad tsunami
He also said 'we're going to smoke em out' and 'we're gonna round em up' but he has done neither.

(admittedly he did stop short of saying 'we're going to head em off at the pass' but that is quite a long sentence for him methinks) Winker

I could not agree more!

Seems Big Brother and me enjoy banter*.

*"Banter" is the art of jovial and frivolous conversation and behavior,

Do you have more soul?

Soul seems to mainly come from poverty...

Do you have more poverty? Yes. Therefore more soul. Big Grin

And you do have the blues.

I like the blues.

"We're smoking them out. They're running. And now we're going to bring them to justice".

President Bush.

Bush's "Bring 'em on" line - a phrase first popularized by World Wrestling Federation star The Rock

Even the “The Dixie Chicks" said they were embarrassed Bush is from Texas!

Is Bush an Idiot? You decide.

Latest Bush gaff

"The American people are proud to welcome your majesty back to the United States, a nation you've come to know very well. After all you've dined with 10 U.S. presidents. You've helped our nation celebrate its bicentennial in 17 -- in 1976," Bush said.

Bush looked at the queen sheepishly. She peered back at him from beneath her black and white hat.

"She gave me a look that only a mother could give a child," Bush said as the crowd burst into laughter."

I bet she looked at him and thought 'one really must suppose him to be an utter cretin'

i'm afraid our dear commander in chief fried one too many brain cells in his boozing / coking days. he really is a tongue-chewing moron. oh well .... wish us all luck here. there is no left and the right are not true conservatives, but fundamentalist christian businessmen who wear polyester slacks, own mutual funds and drink budweiser, and run for school boards so they can put creationism back into the curriculum.
