Joni question
Posted by: rupert bear on 04 April 2010
Recently this song 'Urge for Going' keeps cropping up. I'd guess it was featured in some film that passed me by. It's available on various Hits albums, but my question is where was it located originally? I have (or had - who's got my Ladies of the Canyon!?) all the Joni originals in one format or another - can't find it. Sounds like pre-For the Roses...

It was supposed to be on "Blue" originally, but:
"Urge for Going", her first song to achieve commercial success when recorded by country singer George Hamilton IV, was removed. (It was later released as the B-side of "You Turn Me On, I'm a Radio" and again on her 1996 compilation album, Hits.)

I don't remember hearing it. I was a way at college at that time. I know Judy Collins had a hit with "Both Sides Now" that also brought Joni recognition, then Joni had a hit in 70 with "Big Yellow Taxi" when I had moved to CA as a teen.
Some of her really early stuff I'm not so keen on but by Ladies of the Canyon and Blue, Court and Spark I was on to her big time.

Tom Rush recorded a beautiful version of Urge For Going, as well as Joni's Circle Game. For those not familiar, he was kind of the male Judy Collins back in the day.
I love everything Joni did from her very first album up through Shadows and Light; after that, hit or miss for me. But early Joni? Music just doesn't get any better than that ... one of the greatest geniuses of all time, and I do mean genius.
Best,
Fred

Yeah joni was/is unique, nobody writes sings, does all the art work and stage that she does. I missed her at the hollywood bowl a few years back, that was a shame on me moment.
