Heres a good one that should start you thinking.
Mine has to be "All along the watchtower" by Hendrix.

And how about Paul Anka's 'Wonderwall' (Rock Swings) or perhaps better still 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?!
Discussing this thread with Mrs JWM this evening, we reckon that Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower' should be the soaraway favourite.
But to throw a few more into the hat, how about:
The Stranglers 'Walk on By' (surely the best reading of that great Burt Bacharach number?)
Muse, 'Feeling Good'.
Scissor Sisters, 'Comfortably Numb'*.

Duh... this is EASY!
quote:"In My Time of Dying" is a song by English rock band Led Zeppelin from their 1975 album Physical Graffiti. It is a traditional folk/blues song, based on the song "Jesus Make Up My Dying Bed", recorded by Blind Willie Johnson and later covered by Joshua White, Bob Dylan (on his eponymous debut album) and Martin Gore. The song is the band's longest studio track, clocking in at over 11 minutes.
Led Zeppelin performing "In My Time of Dying" at Earls Court Exhibition Centre, 1975"In My Time of Dying" was played during Led Zeppelin's 1975 and some of their 1977 concert tours, where Robert Plant dedicated the song to the British Labour Party's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Denis Healey. The band never had a proper way to end the song, because of its improvisational nature, and Page liked the approach making the band sound like "a working group". The studio version ends with: "Oh, don't you make it my dyin', dyin', dyin'...cough." John Bonham can be heard asking, "That's gonna be the one, isn't it?" Ironically, Plant was not too keen on singing the song after suffering his car crash in 1975, and had later remarked, "Why the hell did I sing that song?"

I agree about Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac and "Black Magic Woman" but the title of the the thread is "Best Cover Version" not "Cover Version Which Betters The Original".

There does seem to be some support for the JC covers. I have heard the cover of 'Hurt' but all of them are great.....a truly great talent that i've come to know too late on. I can't wait to get the last 2 lp's.
Lots fo good covers mentioned....and Chris, you are right it is meant to be best cover version.

"Staggerlee" (which seems to have various spellings!) was brilliantly done by Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes

Its amazing when you trawl through your music collection how many artists do cover versions and that some of these are great.
Just listened to Ryan Adams version of Wonderwall from the lp Love is Hell. Astounding....sound quality is superb too. I'm not an Oasis fan but that really is a great track.

or perhaps
Bowie: See Emily play
Bowie: Nite flights
Bowie: Let´s spend the night together
Bowie: I wish you would

No, it´s got to be wild is the wind.

Gomez, Nick Drake's 'Black Eyed Dog' -
excellent cover, imaginative, not try to repeat the original (the weakness of too many covers), bringing something new to the reading. Find it on the 'Out West' Live CD.

Ryan, went to see them yesterday at Cambridge Junction. I probably ought to post about it elsewhere, on the appropriate thread, but the lads from Southport (and some, at least, graduates of the same University as me) were blistering.
Having supported them, and experienced them live on a number of occasions, across their career, I can go on and on about Gomez!
But that's for another thread...!
James
Right, back on topic...

Mother's Lament (Traditional) by Cream was it Clapton's finest moment?
A mother was washing her baby one night,
The youngest of ten and a delicate mite.
The mother was poor and the baby was thin,
'Twas naught but an skelingtin covered with skin.
The mother turned 'round for a soap off the rack.
She was only a moment but when she turned back
Her baby had gone, and in anguish she cried,
"Oh, where 'as my baby gone?" The angels replied:
Oh, your baby has gone down the plug 'ole.
Oh, your baby has gone down the plug.
The poor little thing was so skinny and thin,
He should 'ave been washed in a jug, in a jug.

Talking of Johnny Cash, Eric Burdon did an epic version of "Ring of Fire" on his "Love is" album. And another of "River Deep, Mountain High".
