Pre amp problems

When I turn the volume control on my 82 fully anti clockwise I can no longer hear any sound coming from my Arcs, also when I change the input from CD to Tuner I can no longer hear the CD player - I hear the tuner instead! What's going on?

I think that you'll find that one of your inputs is both the same!

When I turn the balance control of my 52 all the way to the left I can no longer hear the right hand SBL. What's all that about then?

Obviously Naim pre amps have some common foibles - mine's going back to Salisbury.
The worst thing is when I turn the volume control to about half way I hear loud thumping noises.....

That'll be the neighbours then...

That's nothing compared to a problem I used to have prior to my amplifier packing up. When I turned the volume control on my 72 pre-amp to the 10 - 11 o/clock position, various items would spontaneously fall from the wall shelves.
The only conclusion I came to was that my HiFi was haunted.

Are you sure you don't have it switched on?

Yes neighbours - turn the volume control about two-thirds the way round and their curtains twitch....

There's nowt wrong with ear-defenders Lads! Recommend a decent pair to your neighbours.
It's not true that only sissies wear them.
Lumberjacks have built-in radios in theirs!
No NAT-01- but so what? They're only neighbours after all.

When I put on just about any cool cd in my cds2 my hands get shaky and my knees get weak,
you know, I can't seem to stand on my own two feet. Who do you thank when you have such luck?
Lord have mercy! I'm All Shook Up.Uh uh huh. MM Yeah, yeah. Help me!

quote:Ha! A common beginner's mistake. Evidently, you have accidentally wired the right channel to the right speaker. It logically follows, therefore, that you must have also wired the wrong channel to the wrong speaker. Since the wrong channel cannot be the right channel it must be the left channel, which you must therefore have erroneously wired to the left speaker. It wouldn't surprise me at all if you had also failed to wire one channel out of phase.

The solution to this problem is very simple: just wire both channels to the right hand speaker. Now, no matter where you set the balance control, all the sound will come from the right speaker .
A useful tip is to turn the balance control all the way to the right so as to avoid any sound at all from the wrong channel being heard. After all, connecting the wrong channel to the right speaker doesn't suddenly make it the right channel.

If I turn the volume control completely clockwise, all the street lights go out.....

I had a problem with my system. I had Shania Twain singing from under the carpet. Then I realised I had my speakers upside down

Geoff, I understand a lot of people have had this problem, although I've never heard of it being caused by upside down speakers before.
More likely - especially if you have an unusually deep pile carpet - you have a residual Shania Twain in the carpet, who is suffering from phase cancellation caused by your now upside down speakers.
Alternatively, if your printer is connected to your hi-fi (and let's face it, these days almost everyone is switching from hi-fi to audio/printing systems) then there could be a problem with your twain drivers.
