Vik Muniz @Baltic

Posted by: Diccus62 on 27 February 2007

Went to the Baltic Gallery in Gateshead yesterday. I must admit I usually find many of the exhibitions dire, though I did enjoy Anthony Gormley's metal people one and the bloke who takes photos of nude people and then blows them up (amazing). However yesterday Vik Muniz's paintings, drawings in chocolate, caviar- pictures of people made entirely of childrens toys, a 6ft picture made up totally of different coloured bits of paper, which when you walked back 20 yards or so became the face of a man. Stunning

I do realise i'm not an art critic and have probably put anyone off actually going, but for me wow.

This picture which absolutely isn't done justice here is the artist made entirely out of autumnal bits and pieces (there is no drawing here)

If you live near it is well worth a trip.

There is also a Brian Eno Video installation thing going on aswell which is quite FAB.

Oh heck i'm going to start gushing in a minute darlinks.

I was there last Thursday, we tend to go once a month, and I thought this exhibit was great. Taking old, oft-seen iconic pictures and turning them into a whole new medium.
Did you see the one with the toy soldiers? Or the garage bits and bobs? They must have taken ages to set up as he must have been up a great height and at an angle to create.

Yeah the one with the Toy soldiers and the one with the bits of kids toys were amazing (I'd like them in my kitchen - the little ones would love them)

You can download the podcast of Muniz in the Baltic. Cracking story about a UPS delivery man commenting on his work. here
