1x250 vs 2x180

Posted by: Christopher on 24 June 2002

Anybody heard a 2x180 active system? I already have a 180, facing option of upgrading to 250 or going active with another 180... can anybody help?

What else would I need to go active? (excuse my ignorance, I don't know how the kit works, just that it sounds good). I'd pop in and ask my local dealer but not so many of them over in Switzerland...

The naim active setups use power amps and an active crossover which 'replaces' the speaker crossovers. The IXO crossover has it's own power supply, the SNAXO needs a HiCap. SNAXO's come in 2 or 3 way versions, one amp is needed per speaker driver.

The key bit is that the Naim loudspeakers are optimised for the active crossovers with appropriate settings in the crossover and also the ability to quickly remove or bypass the inbuilt speaker crossovers. They also sound great active.

If you want to go active with non-Naim speakers you need some specialist advice about the wether the speaker crossover can be decoupled easily, wether Naim can 'tune' the SNAXO to the best settings, and most of all wether it is actually going to make it all sound worthwhile.

I use 3x180's with Ruark Crusaders mk2.Naim set up a SNAXO 3-6 to work with them and my local dealer did the alterations to the Ruarks.I was very pleased with result,it was the biggest improvement i have made to my system.

I've seen an ex-dem 180 for £900... pretty cheap by Swiss standards. Any guidance as to roughly how much a crossover will be?

Will this be better than going the 250 route.. that's the burning question!

The burning issue is that you it may not be possible to actually set up active with those speakers.

If you had SBL/Credo etc I would happily recommend 2x180 vs 250 but this just may not work with B+W at all

If you want to upgrade your system but keep the speakers I'd add XPS or supercap the 82.
