Olympics

Gotta have a few posts on this.

Ski racing suits are getting ever more colorful and graphic. Great racing.

Skating costumes are ever more outlandish tho last night there were 2 Canadians that toned it down and looked wonderful. Some of those guys should just go back to basic black. I'm not looking forward to tonight's show of peacock males.

Snow boarders are ever so beyond it with baggy stuff. The Americans have pants that have been so worked over to look like they're aged jeans. Very funny they have this counterculture thing going on. I'm sure the half pipe will be spectacular.

What's with curling? probably started back in 12th century with housewife brooms and favorite pot filled with stones. Bet she was mad

Any other observations?

Aren't snow and ice key elements for the chosen sports in the Winter Olympics? I can't remember ever seeing rugby or football in a ice rink, and as this link shows, snow does tend to stop play. Winker

Snow stops play

That's fair enough but most countries don't have snow and ice. Isn't the olympic movement supposed to be inclusive? In which case having to play sports involving snow and ice would rule out athletes from almost all countries. After all there's not a lot of snow and ice in Africa, Central and Southern America and significant parts of Europe

Not a lot of snow and ice in vancouver either! Smile

Not a lot of snow and ice in South America? Photos from a mid-summer trip I did a few years back...

Inclusive is right...Winter Olympic 'Teams' from Brazil, Kenya, Ghana (born in Glasgow lives in Milton Keynes), Cayman Islands and Senegal kinda put a new topic in the Globbal Warming debate.

Apparently, the BBC, that paragon of VFM and efficiency has sent more staff than the BOC has sent athletes.

Don't you just love 'em?

Wouldn't mind if they had a highlights program around 7 PM - there is one early afternoon, the next program being after Newsnight. Sure you can record, but the scheduling is poor. Then there is the moving of coverage to Freeview and the like, what if you don't have one of them? If you have Freeview, on occasion they cut the stream mid event and announce that it continues online!

winkyincanada - new 'snow' plug-in for Photoshop Smile Looks a good experience, what camera/lens did you lug?

Cheers,

Those were shot with an F5 on Velvia. 28-70 f2.8 and 80-200 f2.8 AFS Nikkors.

Grumpy old man time again.

Hours and hours of ice dance, and then just 1 hour of the first knockout stage of the Ice Hockey on Eurosport today. I haven't seen any ice hockey on the BBC yet, but then their listings are so general.

If the Winter Olympics isn't about people hitting each other with sticks while wearing ice skates, then I don't know what is.

Crosby vs Ovechkin later today....should be a great game!

Clare Balding - doesn't she normally deal with horse racing and upsetting jockeys with bad teeth? Call me grumpy, but I do prefer to have sports commentators who have a relationship with the sport.

I think the reality is we are (generally) pants at the Winter Olympics so we don't have famous ex medal winners to choose from to commentate.

....I notice how completely uninterested we all are with the ice skating in Vancouver since no Brits seem to be competative (compared to the zillions of Brits who crowded around the TV to watch the likes of Robin Curry, and obviously Torville and Dean)

Sometimes the beeb can't win ...if they bring in extra commentators they'll be accused of wasting money ..if they use the likes of Clair Balding and Steve Cram they get accused of not using specialist commentators!

It does look great in HD though!

Good luck, should be a great game.

American coverage is pretty much impossible to watch with all of the commercials which are stuffed between selected, pre-recorded performances. On the other hand if you can abide the commercials, you get only the best performances and most spectacular wipe-outs chosen for your viewing pleasure. And the commentators sound really perceptive because they review the tape numerous times before recording their commentary.

Would tend to agree with you on this.

Local coverage here is not too bad. A few HD channels that don't always show the same thing simultaneously. A little too many "Bart's People" segments and too many talking heads for my liking. I'd watch with the sound off if it was up to me, but my beloved can tolerate the inane and relentless nattering better than I can. God, she can even watch Oprah!

oh I agree it's highly processed, I've actually had several days off not watching. But then again the visuals have me stunned when I do watch. Lately I've been much more interested in my friends vinyl collection I inherited and sorting thru.

The last few days of the event is really grueling after so much info and visuals. It would be nice to get cable or satellite feeds without the hype. However, the BIG bucks of advertising will pound you into submission till you just have to turn it off like I did.

I would like to thank the Canadians for the high that remained over the games and sent us so much wonderful moisture in the jet stream to this parched country. Replenishing ground water and vegetation is so much more important than gold silver or bronze.

Mucho gracias
