Blasted printer - I hate it

Posted by: 7V on 09 April 2005

My Epson CX6400 refuses to print magenta. This is despite my now using an official Epson cartridge.

I've tried cleaning the heads many times but to no avail.

Does anyone have any recommendations for fixing this?

Thanks
Steve M

PS: It's been a bad computer day anyway as I renewed by Norton Internet Security updates and the resulting reinstallation completely screwed up my PC.

I would try uninstalling the printer and then reinstalling it.

Maybe the driver files have became corrupted.....

Maybe you could try to find another word instead of magenta ?

Many thanks guys.

I'll reinstall the printer first and then try the SSC software if necessary.

My hunch would be that you have a completely blocked magenta print head. SSC might enable you to give the magenta channel a damm good clean but don't rely on it!

I have had two Epson printers 'die' with this type of problem - I now use a Canon with a replaceable print head for this reason.

I doubt if it is a software problem and therefore unlikely to be resolved by re-installing the driver.

Good luck.

So I've now discovered.

At least I've spent an interesting day repairing the damage arising from the Epson uninstall program deleting an essential DLL file. Frown - there should really be a 'tearing my hair out' smiley.

I can't get the SSC software as I never succeed in getting to the download page. Has anyone got any other suggestions on getting that software as I'd quite like to give the Magenta cartridge a serious blast.

Meanwhile I spoke to an Epson man on the phone. It turns out that the warranty on the printer has run out by 2 weeks. Roll Eyes

He offered me a replacement for £67, which includes them picking up the old printer but having spent £150 just a year and 2 weeks ago, I'm reluctant to give them any more money whatsoever. It's not as if I used the damn thing much; 95% of my printing is done with my trusty, reliable and OLD HP1100 laser.

Printers are so cheap now they are disposable.

We have had 4 in two years.

It is cheaper to buy a new Lexmark entry level printer that buying one new cartidge for the old one?

Recycling and re-usable don't come into it.

Steve

I have a small independent PC shop that is also an Epson Printer Centre. I buy all my blank media and (compatible) Epson ink from them - recently bought an Epson R200 printer from them too.

I mentioned your problem and their suggestion (if it was my printer) was to "bring it in".

Maybe you have a similar outlet near you that is as approachable ?

I had an epson once, it refused to print when it decided it had run out of ink, this infuriated me. Then two heads got permenatly blocked, I wasted a whole ink cart trying to clean in.

I got a canon in the end, quieter, quicker and even the canon inks are well priced, although I use compatibles (£1.80 each) which has never given me a problem in nearly two years.

I will never get another epson.

Be careful with lexmark as well, the print head is in the cart so compatibles are still bloody expensive.

My (now my dad's) Epson was totally fuxxed until this weekend (mind you, so was the rest of his PC, which now isn't!). It's a 2000-vintage Stylus 720 IIRC. Anyway, fiddling with the ink tanks made the Epson work again, but the power-on dance and the wasted ink (both in cleaning heads AND the power-on dance - not to mention when it claims the tanks are dry when they're not!) reminds me why I ditched the bitch!

Sure, my ancient HP 890C (my old housemate threw it out!) has its problems but crap prints and blocked heads aren't two of them!

Am in the market for a new one - what's the cheapest Canon that'll have FOUR ink tanks? (Or HP for that matter)?

Also, are any of the cheaper colour lasers worth bothering with???

BTW - Epson printers hate being left unused - they clog up on a whim.

When I had an Epson and had trouble with a blockage I phoned up the company and they told me how to run a secret extra strong cleaning cycle. It might be worth checking if one exist for your printer. [They reason they didn't publicise it was, I seem to remember, to avoid people complaining about losing a lot of ink that way].

PS I replaced it with a Canon, which was mostly trouble-free until it failed suddenly. I replaced that with a bottom of the range Canon (i250), which has not wasted a single sheet of paper in over a year. I don't use it frequently but that doesn't seem to bother it.

I have eventually managed to download the SSC software which has just such an extra strong cleaner. As yet, it hasn't fixed the problem however.

Apparently the Epsons have very fine nozzles.
