LP12 base

Posted by: Christopher on 12 March 2003

Hi

Does the LP12 actually need a base?
I have just procured a new LP12 at a very reasonable price, but doesn't have the base. Is this just a board, or is this also the feet etc?

If I need a base should I get a trampolin or standard? What's the difference?

Getting excited now, all I'll need is the arm and my LP collection will be back in action! :-)
On this note has anybody tried the Origin Live arms with the LP12?

Chris,

I am using my LP12 without base, directly on the glass shelve of the mana soundtable. Its sounds great. Try it. And also try the aro, it will make you re-discover your lp collection.

Malcolm Steward[recently referred to in a thread on this forum]recommended using an LP12 without a base, just beware of electric shock risk[only a problem if children are around and decide to shove their mits under the turntable]
Beware of the Trampolinn:I used to have one.Gives the impression of more bass, but in fact it just produces a very tuneless, bloated bass. This effect seems more apparent with better electronics,so I had mine removed and much happier with it now.I'd agree with getting a Naim Aro as well

you dont need a base but you DO need feet.3 are bestthey just screw into the plinth.

Thanks for the advice. Will save me some money too (for the Aro!)

Can I buy the feet alone then?

I concur with the 'no baseboard' advice, for a better sound. You do need the feet though, and I reckon that you could get them in any decent DIY shop.

The product of rocket science; they ain't.

I have tried hardboard base, plastic base, tramplinn and no base.

No base is best, esp. on Mana Phase IV.

The Trampolinn is for putting the LP12 on heavy chests of drawers or some such.

I am going to play around with feet when I get time. (I like to pick toenails anyway)

Anything to do with Michael Rother?

I have an older LP12, (1984) there are 4 holes in the corners of the plinth to accept the usual screw on feet, and two holes in each long section of plinth, in the middle, that are supposed to accept the two scews that held the old base board on.
I'm not sure of the set up of newer LP12's and they may need holes to accept screws.
You could buy stick on feet also if the plinth edge is wide enough for them to fit securely.
Russ andrews do screw on wood cones, Maplins sell different kinds of rubber feet , Mana do some feet also and you could even get some from a LInn dealer , but exspect to pay more from them.
As to 3 verses 4 feet.3 one at the front two at the back are best especially if the plinth is not exactly level all round , which it wont be.
With for you will get micro rocking which makes the sound grainy and a bit blurred.
The exception is were the platform you put the turntable on will deform from 3 feet , some could sag at the side with the foot in the middle or the plaform is designed purposely for 4 feet like Mana racks which are tuned for it(although I belive there is a version for 3 footed decks) .
Make sure that if possible 3 feet are use all the way down in exactly the same place in the underneight layers if you have them.
If the sound is too lean with 3 feet remember not to blame the feet , the tracking weight or vta etc.can now be more accuratly set due to the more stable deck and you should be able to get the sound balance back in order with a little adjustment.

Rother vs Rother

I am a BIG fan of Anthony Rother, the new electrowave whizz kid From Germany, with such classics as 'Don't stop the Beat', 'Biomechanik' and 'Simulationszeitalter'
(might need to check the old spelling there?).

I am also a big fan of Michael Rother, both solo and with Neu and Harmonia. I have all the available releases I know of, and I particulaly favour 'Katzenmusik' and 'Flammende Herzen'.

I do not know of any family ties, I think it is a coincidence that are both Rother.

A bit like Marc E. Smith and TV Smith. Distant cousins perhaps?

M. Rother is old school Krautrock, A. Rother new school.
