Lucinda Williams - West
Posted by: Diode100 on 19 February 2007
I always liked Lucinda's Car wheels on a Gravel Road, but her new one, West, is simply superb. She has a great voice and (like Natalie Merchant) is a lady who isn't overawed by getting out in front of a really muscular backing band. Oh, to hear her dueting with Terry Reid, now that would be something.

Mine is on order, hope to get it soon.
She has simply one of the truest voices around.
And guaranteed not to be a compressed sounding quagmire.

Patience Jim I know you will love it. Mine has hardly been off my system for the last couple of weeks. I got my copy of Ohio from OTR in the post the other day but struggling a little to get into some of it. Will keep trying.

Picked a copy up this evening from Fopp on the way home for £10 - what I heard sounded great before king Morpheus dragged me off to the land of nod.
No reflection on the music I hasten to add!
I'll try again tomorrow...

What is Fopp? I take it it's a record store?

Jim, Fopp is a record store chain that started North of the Border and have now purchased or taken over some of the bankrupt Music Zone stores. Particullary good for selling cd's for £5. Personally I never buy from them as I can always find the disc cheaper elsewhere.

They have recently opened their new anchor store on Tottenham Court Road in London - the classical section has rapidly been taken over by dvd'd etc - a sign of the times I'm afraid.
What attracts me into their store, apart from the fact it's very close to my office, is their vinyl collection - you can't beat flicking through lp's in a record store every once in a while!

Car Wheels which is pure Country Rock or the latest West but I love all her stuff. What makes Lu is her lyrics.

West is great and I also like Essence which is an all acoustic album that is well recorded....

Finally arrived, seems ages ago I ordered it. Only played twice but I like it and I'm sure it will grow on me even more. Her voice just seems to get better and better. Sublime!

I bought this on the strength of hearing What If from this months Uncut cover CD. It hasn't gripped me yet after two plays, but I'm pretty sure it will. It isn't going to the shelf just yet.

On first listen it seems a little more refined than her previous offerings, mind the quality of the musicians on there is pretty top draw.

Her "Live at the Fillmore" double CD is also very fine. Most of her best songs recorded in the raw. Very clean and "you are there"
My fave album of hers is Essence. Unmissable.
