Torque the DBLs screws........
Posted by: Onthlam on 23 August 2003
Can anyone offer the best wrench to buy at Home Depot?
What are the torque settings for the Drivers in the DBLS?
Has anyone put on paper "how to" optimize the suspension for the tweeters?
Thank you,
Marc

Derek,
What/where do I find these PTs?
Thanks,
Marc

Mark:
This is the wrench I got with my NBLs which has the same tweet and mid.
Can't find my manual for the setting either.
I think RS is a brand from the UK.
Just get a Sears Craftsman torque driver. I'm sure it will suffice. Just make sure you get the kind that "clicks". They are more accurate than the twisting bar type.

Arthur,
Did I understand that yours came with the NBLs?
Thanks for taking the time..The picture helps...
I will pick up a wrench that clicks...
Are the allen screws metric?
Regards,
Marc
Still need the nums.......

4mm metric. And 3.8 Nm of torque on the bass and mid. The correct torque wrench was $55 in Home Depot as I recall.
Dressing the tweeter cables was the most important aspect of getting a nice bounce out of my DBL tweeters - and not doing the screws up too tight.

Martin,
Thank you...
Would it be possible for you to take a picture of the tweeter cables? (In proper dress...)
To my understanding there is some tweaking of the metal bits that are in view at the front of the tweeter...
Could you also describe the steps to make this process/project as easy as possible???
I wish there was something like this in the manual.
Went to the Naim site..There was no manual for the DBLs to be found.......
I'm off to Home Depot....
Regards,
Marc

The SBL bass driver bolts are supposed to be torqued to 3.6nm. The 'light-duty' of my 2 automotive torque wrenches starts at 10nm! When I enquired I could not find one that would go as low as 3.6nm. Any ideas where you would get a torque wrench that went so low? And how critical to performance is it having the bolts tightened to 3.6nm
Cheers

Marc:
The person that I bought my NBLs from said that he got Chris K from NANA to get him one. The box that it came in has "NANA" markered on the top. I'm guessing here but he probably did a good job of begging.
The 3.6 Newton/meters sounds about right. It's just a touch more tight that hand tight, but tighter than "Linn tight".
Martin is correct about it making a difference too. It's actually a little disconcerting that it makes as much difference as it does.

Shouldn't that read "lighter than Linn tight" Arthur(?)

Assuming you are telling Marc what he needs to know, would this not be worth publishing for mere mortals?

Went to Home Depot. Nothing.
Called Oshe..Nothing
Called Sears. Confused.
Went to sears.. Located booty....
Martin:
The lowest I could find was one with the ability go as low as 3.61...I ended up torqueing to 3.72....That was as close to 3.80 I could get on the wrench.
When I hit the magic spot, it was very subtle. The wrench just gave a bit. No click...
The tweeters I am not going to touch until someone can walk me through it..........
Every one of them were loose. Some were a matter of a quarter turn or less. There were a few that were closer to a full half turn.........
The verdict:
Made a big difference. Cleaned it almost to much. Much tighter all around.
Thank you all. My quest for torqueing for the first time has been completed.
I need to turn over now, I'm tired........
We'll cuddle in the morning--I promise..
Best Regards,
Marc

Dave,
Thanks...
I had asked him about this in person.
He said it was easy...
If I were to feel good and confident with the end result? I would need to bench marc another DBL setup.. To see how the dress of the cables are. To see what the bounce feels and looks like. Most important, how it should sound...
I will contact him to see what we can do to make this happen..
Thanks..
Marc

Dave Simpson wrote
I stand corrected.
"Linn Tight" has always meant to me:
"tighter than a nun's bun on Good Friday"
At least that's how it was explained to me on my first LP12 setup demo. It made it easier to remember that way.
I don't think that 3.6 n/m is that tight.

"tighter than a nun's bun on Good Friday"
LOL ;-)
"I don't think that 3.6 n/m is that tight."
Sounds like it (and quite different from DMS B-110s/B-139s which love to be torqued ;-)

Any info on the $55 Home Depot wrench?
It's called a Husky 39102.

Er eventually, but I don't possess a digital camera and tweaking those tweeters up is a pain, so I'll send you the pics when I do it. I guess Chris can run you through it though.

The Sears driver seems a bit pricey at $149
Sears torque driver
Mouser and Radio Shack don't seem to have any offerings either.

Have an idea...
I just bought this wrench. I will not need it for at least 6 monthes.
I would suggest that we get this wrench to as many homes as possible. knowone needs to pay this much money when I could send it to the first person. Then the next person pays to send it to the next...and so on...
Let me know what you think..........

Marc
