New Naim NDX
Posted by: JYOW on 02 July 2010
The new digital only magazine "The Absolute Audiophile" features a visit to Naim and Linn. The Linn visit was interesting with an interview with Ivor's son talking about their famous abandonment of the silver discs into the brave new DS world. The Naim visit was more like a factory tour/product rundown so nothing new for this gang. But there is a mention of a new reference grade HDX, presumably called the NDX. Also a higher grade Uniti.
I wonder what would be in the NDX? If I were them I would go the opposite direction an just strip the HDX naked. That would be a lot more "reference" quality than the HDX, call it the "HDX unplugged" or something like that.

I bought it because it is the best source I have ever heard on my kit, it was in my price range, and exactly what I have been waiting for since I bought the Beresford and my Naim kit 2 years ago.
Yes I can appreciate that. Personally I would be in the market for a Naim dac below the current one.

(edit) everything Dave said
I always enjoy Dave's thoroughly knowledgeable posts. At the same time they make me cringe that hifi has become so complicated. Don't know if the whole networking stuff it's just a US thing or that the whole world has overtaken me. But I appreciate Dave's point that the HDX is actually a nice solution, a traditional source product.
I've taken my digital system as far as I can still follow what's happening within it. I like iTunes and AIFF files. We have a collection of iPhones, iPods and an iPad around here that we sync with iTunes. So I bought a new Macbook and assigned the old one to music duties. The HiFace is a great and simple way to get music out. A decent Chord cable to the DAC (Beresford) and a Naim cable to the amp. Works for me. Obvious upgrade: a better DAC.

There was talk also of some sort of SuperUniti or higher end Uniti. I assume there is no further news? If there was such a beast then what would people like to see?
Personally, a combination of the Supernait with a higher spec source section from the Uniti would be great. Especially if it had more of the XS voicing for say £3k

Uniti voicing is already closer to XS. I'll keep the SN's and it's DAC, thanks,
I haven't heard of anything like that coming but it would be easy to use an even better UnitiServe into a current SN.

Any news about the NDX?
Naim seems to be offering what HDX is meant to do by pieces,
first came the DAC, later an standalone ripper-server and now an standalone network-streamer?
This would make sense to me (different partners for the DAC depending on your preference),

Let's say, I'm owner of Nait 5i & CD 5i. Why Naim is keeping ignoring their 'budget' customers? That would be nice to be able to add kind of Uniti 5i / NDX5i to Nait5i/CD5i combo (with similar price range of course). i-Series needs its own server/network player, don't you think?

Add a Uniqute. Perfect.

This is no solution. It has to be something the same size as 5i and without amplifier. And with same price range. Very simple. Naim - please?
Well... I can always go to Olive and their new O3HD music server.

That's what a NaimUniti is for.
Seriously - better preamp section (there is no preamp section in a NAIT5i), shorter signal paths from built-in CD player, built-in streaming, and less space (one unit) in a full-width, full-height chassis.
And you can connect a Stageline to the phono input.
And it has subwoofer outs.
And it can be controlled from an iPod touch / iPhone etc.
And not much more expensive than the CD5i/NAIT5i pair - but the UnitiQute is proof that Naim is focusing on its budget customers, perhaps more so than in years past.

folks,
how does the new NDX sound like?
and- i found it confusing- the NDX should be paired with NAC 202 NAP 200 or Supernait (Naim web under "suggested system") ....
does this mean there will be some bigger one (or two)?
thx ralf

Suggested system for the HDX: NAC 282/NAP250

I hope we will have something similar from Naim soon!

Hi folks,
while I'm quite happy that Naim finally offers a pure Network Streamer (without built-in amp & built-in CDP but with support of internet radio), I'm not so happy with the price. I wonder if a solution consisting of Naim DAC, HTPC (e.g. MacMini) plus an USB-SPDIF adapter wouldn't be better than purchasing an NDX. Your thoughts?
Best, Michael

I've been there with computer/DAC/interface and software options. The cost is lower, the stress levels are higher (because of endless options for fiddling), the box count is higher, and the sound quality is probably lower.
There's something very compelling about a single box solution where the manufacturer has invested R&D $s in addressing software and hardware issues.
Theoretically a streamer can be upgraded over time with new software to incorporate new formats and/or new features.
I recently moved to Klimax DS which sounds fantastic and is only a one box on the rack.
Just some thoughts from someone who's spent a few years with computer audio...

Hi Graham,
the box count isn't higher: As the NDX doesn't have a built-in HD, you need a NAS or something else. But you're right: the stress level is higher with a HTPC solution. On the other hand you have more otions (e.g. using it for movies / movie recording as well).
So let's hope that the Euro gets stronger compared to the Pound. Then is getting cheaper for me to buy an NDX

Box count to me is boxes on the hifi rack. Clearly for a streaming solution network storage is required somewhere. This is unlikely to be in the listening room due to disk noise and general ugliness of storage
However, once music is made available on the network it can be played anywhere around the house. This is a massive "lifestyle" shift from playing CDs.

Patrick, Roll over to the system pics 2010 thread in HiFi corner. Nice shots from Graham very recently.
