"Live Al***s" of yesteryear

Posted by: long-time-dead on 09 October 2005

WOW - just dug out some old vinyl from the attic. Stuff from my musical upbringing that I forgot was there........

First spin in years and loved it for what it was.

The album in question - "Sammy Hagar - Live Loud and Clear".

Now, it may not appeal to the ears of the acoustic or orchestral cogniscenti but this album brought a rise to the hairs of my arms and a jogging of my memory banks.

If you have the album in your collection - get it on and play it "at 11".

If you haven't and like "heavier" rock - source it (it is available on CD).

Great fun !!!!

An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer (1959)

Tom gave up satire when Henry Kissinger won the Nobel peace prize - he though as a piece of satire that could never be surpassed

All the world seems in tune on a spring afternoon,
When we're poisoning pigeons in the park.
Every Sunday you'll see my sweetheart and me, as we poison the pigeons in the park.
When they see us coming, the birdies all try and hide,
But they still go for peanuts when coated with cyanide.

Otherwise it's got to be the live tracks on ACD by HMHB - it contains versions of

Albert Hammond Bootleg
Reflections in a Flat
Sealclubbing
Architecture and Morality, Ted and Alice
Fred Titmus
Time Flies By (When You're a Driver of a Train)
All I Want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit
The Trumpton Riots

I remember Tom Lehrer - my parents used to listen to him, pretty funny, maybe a little near the knuckle for some though...

Tom Leher In Concert, Decca 844241-2

Near the knuckle, yes, but like much that makes one laugh out loud, it contains much truth...

The Flanders and Swann sets, EMI CDS 797464-2 on 3 CDs, are just as much fun and rather more English, being more subtle, but I suspect just as cutting in the covered, paradoxical view!

I have a box set called The Remains of Tom Lehrer which contains a 3 CDs with the studio albums Songs by Tom Lehrer and More of Tom Lehrer and live recordings Tom Lehrer Revisited, An Evening Wasted With Tom Lehrer and That Was The Year That Was. I think they are wonderful. I also have the Complete Flanders & Swan, which is marvellous too. I really like comedy songs, which is probably why I think Half Man, Half Biscuit are the best group around at the moment.

I thoroughly recommend all the Lehrer, Flanders & Swan and HMHB material.
