Car Trackers - had one fitted?
Posted by: andy c on 05 January 2006
Hi,
I am looking into buying a motor, but some insurance companies require the car I'm looking at to be fitted with a tracking device.
Have any of you had such a device fitted? If so what made you choose the tracker in question, & why?
Thanks for any help you can give me.
regards
Andy c!

Forget the tracker - drive it in plain clothes at 100mph and you will get the best tracking system the country has to offer.
Otherwise - consult your insurance company to see what their preferred option is. Getting it back might not be the best option - getting them to pay out in the event of a theft is. Their upheld recommendation will be worth it's weight in gold if the worst ever happens .........

In answer to your question there is a tracker horizon fitted to my car. It was a requirement of my insurance policy.

Replace the original car emblem badges with some of these Click
Should work a treat.

Hi Andy,
I have a Tracker Monitor (the firm is called Tracker, the flavour of the device is Monitor).
The idea is that the tracking device can be activated from outside if I notice that someone is pinching/has pinched the car and also, the monitor bit means that it incorporates a trembler and is wired into the alarm. If the trembler, er, trembles without the alarm having been de-activated in the correct way, the device sends a signal.
All of this does nothing to prevent theft via stolen keys, but I have another device which prevents/minimises that, which I'll keep secret.
I chose the Tracker network because they use their own dedicated radio masts which aren't used for anything else, and probably because their marketing and promotional videos are pretty good. I'm sure a GPS based mobile phone system would be just as good.
It wasn't (amazingly) a requirement of the insurance co. to fit such a device, I just wanted to protect my car.
This should help!

Hi Andy,
I recall asking the same question when I purchased security for my Supra. The answer was to make sure the car was never stolen in the first place.
Both cars are now allarmed imobilised and are never left unlocked anywhere.
Regards

PB - Your theory and practice is OK until the local car liberation group break into your house and take the keys, possibly damaging you and the other occupants and contents of your house.

Trackers are not advertised on the car so offer no deterrent to theft, only increased chance of recovery.
My last car, an Evo VIII, required a Tracker by the insurers. A friend bought the car from me and he fitted the top-of-the range "Tracker" with all the mobile phone and GPS transmitter bits. Can't say if it is any good 'cos the car hasn't been stolen yet.

I know of a number of people on another forum I frequent who have had their tracker fitted cars recovered.
But would you want your pride and joy recovered after a trashing? Mute point perhaps.
One of the contributors had his house broken into, keys taken and car stolen. It sounded a very unpleasant experience with psychological after effects.
