Whats the weakest link in my first ever naim system?

Posted by: DynaudioBoy on 17 May 2003

Hi, just getting into naim and finding it a learning experince. Please excuse any mistakes I make I have flu and feeling quite clumsy at the moment Smile

My budget is tight so I need solid reaosns for each upgrade. I have already made one decision to get a hicap so that is in the post. I currently have:

Chord Chamelon Silver Plus, terminated with RCA by chord.

NAC72/NAC140

Hicap in post

Chord Oddessy 2 Metres run to each speaker

Dynaudio Audience 62

Now on paper and reading from other posts ect, I get the feeling the system is all wrong, but sounds so right!

I am happy with my system, just have caught the upgrade bug that all naim owners seem to get!

I would prefer to leave out my source because, I can't afford a Naim CD player, but please assume it is a good source if giving advice.

I am kinda out of my league with naim price wise, but don't seem to have suffered when I am listening to music.

I have the dyns because I like a bit of bass, especially punchy rythmical tunes which I understand the naim does exceptionally well with its good timing.

Thanks for any replies!

The Hi-Cap will make a great difference, use the black SNAICs as well.

My main concern would be with the speaker cable. Please call Naim and ask them if 2m a side of Chord odyssey is ok electrically. The usual minimum spec is 3.5m a side of Naim speaker cable (NAC A5). Provided 2m a side of Odyssey is electrically equivalent, then there should be no problem. If there is a problem it could be detrimental to the health of your amp!

The Hicap will help enormously since those 62's suck juice big time and the 72 always benefits massively with the addition of the power supply. Your weakest link sounds to be your source, therefore, but you knew that didn't you? Smile

Frank.

I still use Chord Odyssey 4 from my old setup, now running with Nac202/Nap200 amps with no problems. Changing to NAC A5 may improve or not, but to say NAC A5 cannot be improved is to rule out Naim making a NAC A6.

I have purchased NAIM NACA5 2 x 4.5m, so will soon hear the results. If it's any big change will post.

Cheers

The weak link in anyone's system is the opportunity to sit and listen as much as we should to justify the outlay. This is why I work on my own, in an office with no-one else, phone off the hook and music on all day. Its not my main system, but maybe it should be.
