Problems playing Sony CDRs on CDS2

Posted by: John3 on 30 April 2003

I recently bought a Sony RCD-W3 Cd recorder mainly for making compilations for the car. This is a twin deck machine which makes recording relatively easy. The CDRs it produces play back fine on the RCD-W3, in the car, also on the Sony discman and on the kids Sony portable boom boxes. However try playing them in the CDS2 and all I get is jumping and glitches making it unlistenable. I don't get it - cheap Sony machines play these discs back but a £6k player can't handle it! Is this a Sony v Philips read mechanism issue? Anyone recommend a CDR audio blank disc that plays back successfully on a CDS2? I've only tried Sony blank audio CDR's by the way.

And the disks are not CDR-W's? These are much fussier in CD players than burn only once CDRs.

Burning at a lower speed used to help with my 10 year old Arcam Alpha. But that was when 4x was considered to be fast.

Sony media has a fantastic reputation but I still have problems with it, even the 40x stuff they produce today.

FWIW I'd recommend TDK or Fuji. Hope this helps.

I've now tried a different blank CDR - TDK RXG, these don't skip on the CDS in the way that the Sony 'colourline' discs did.
