Does anybody here like Phil Jeays

Fame
Idiots In Uniforms

Quite talented IMHO - with an obvious influence from a great Belgian songwriter who was known as Jackie.

Faust's A Singert

What if I die one day
In a car crash miles away
For my wild and reckless speed
As a policeman asks of me
How I came to hit this tree
And I answer 'ha very fast indeed'

What if I fade away
Tiptoeing to that day
When I give up this mortal soul
Apologizing everyday
For still not being on my way
To that black and gaping hole

The singer dies oh tragic loss
Who gives a damn who gives a toss
No pity more those that remain
Those whose success you can't explain
And ask yourselves when they go
Will the ranks of heaven grow
Or when it comes their time to die
Will the hordes of devils cry
You wanted love we closed their eyes
You wanted gold we struck them dumb
You wanted fame we kept them deaf
Now pay the price your time is come
And now you're here oh Mr Sting
You've made us proud we must admit
They gave you love
They gave you gold
They gave you fame
And you gave them ...
you'll need to listen to find out, but I agree 100%

You can listen to lots of his songs for free by clicking here, which is his web site.

So where is he based then - his contact address is Midhurst which is over here not over there?

Hadn't spotted that hence my not quick enough edit.

He had lived in Bexhill and Eastbourne though. Smile

Do any of you guys like his music though?

I've always liked Jacques Brell's songs, mostly sung by Scott Walker, but Phil comes over as a English Jacques Brell and creates a unique feel to his songs - great lyrics delivered in a very forceful way. I first heard Mr Jeays on the Radio, but have started buying his albums after listening to the MP3s on his site.

Just thought it made a change on the forum to discuss something other than what's the favourite PF album or how wonderful Bach is. Nothing wrong with either, but sometimes it is nice to look beyond the accepted bastions of rock and classical.

Recently I've discovered the music of the Smoke Fairies (some interest on here) and previously Waking the Witch (no interest on here) - which of course is fair enough. I think people are missing out if they don't have a listen, but views will vary

Do you think it is worth posting on the forum about something different or should I just stick to the odd informative post about my musical heroes when somebody else enquires (i.e. Shirley Collins, HMHB, Sandy Denny, Annie Haslam, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Keith Emerson, the Beatles, the Kinks, ISB, Robert Calvert, Chas Hodges, Karine Polwart and Christy Moore)?

I'd really be interested to hear of artists that you all listen to that I've probably not heard.

In the mean time here is Phil Jeays

ROTF - you should post, absolutely.

Have you listened to the album John Grant - Queen of Denmark. It has been played more than any other album this year Chez Lontano. I think there is a chance you could quite like it. A grower but so good on many levels.

I will give Phil a listen tomorrow as right now I am playing some Floyd.

Stu, Adrian

Thanks for the posts - I realise his music is an acquired taste. It is the lyrics and the performance that counts in PJ's case for me - the same is true of HMHB, of course.

Adrian I do like Midlake that you recommended to me and I notice John Grant - Queen of Denmark came in to being because of Midlake. I listened to JG singing a song called Sigourney Weaver and really liked it so will definitely check out the album - thanks.
