ACE Vinyl

Posted by: Richard Dane on 17 October 2003

Having been completely seduced by CD reissues from the ACE catalogue, I realise I have not, as yet, tried any of their vinyl reissues.

Has anybody tried them and more importantly, what is the quality of the mastering, vinyl, pressing etc...?

I can't believe it. With so many vinyl-heads on this forum, surely somebody has bought one of the Ace LP reissues....?

To refresh memories, they have Isaac Hayes, Funkadelic, John lee Hooker, BB King, Booker T, Rufus Thomas, Link Wray, Boogaloo Joe Jones and many, many more.... Anybody?

Richard:

I have this one on ACE vinyl:

B.B. KING
Live at the Regal
ACE CH86

I have never heard the original vinyl pressing but this one is good but it might be from a digital master. The pressing, which I bought quite a few years ago, is from Germany (did Ace press all their lps there?) and is very clean and quiet. I would recommend it for the music alone.

The only other Ace LP I have is a novelty item:

Dion and the Belmonts
Hits
ACE CHA 176

An entertaining LP for those nostalgic about the 50's. I 'm fairly certain that it is from a digital master but like the one above it is a very clean and quiet pressing.

I bought both of these quite a few years ago and I have not seen any new ACE lps for years. Are they still releasing LPs in the UK?

That's it I'm afraid. Hope this helps though.

I have ACE CH66, 'A Shot of Rhythm and Soul' by Arthur Alexander. But I bought it back in 1983 so I didn't consider that it would be relevant to any modern vinyl. Pressed in England too.

I'd never really heard of Arthur Alexander until I read a column by Paul Benson in the old 'Practical Hifi'. This was when he was interesting and before he got into PWB....

Thanks Paul & Paul,

I was considering going on a splurge for some crucial Soul on vinyl and was also toying with adding "Live at the Regal" too despite already having a nice but slightly worn earlier issue.

It makes some sense that they're cut from the digital copy masters. Ah well, they don't shout about any "audiophool" pretensions so I guess that's fair enough. I think I'll stick with the CDs.

Thanks for your feedback.
