I am 48. I having been thinking along these lines for almost forty of those years, and expressed the view to Arnold Darlington, who wrote the Nuffield O- and A-level Biology Syllabi. He was a notable biologist as well as a part time teacher, who I was lucky enough to have teach me between the ages of 9 and 14.
I mentioned this as an 11 year old, and he agreed, but told me not to worry too much as nothing would be done about it till too late, in any case.
"Enjoy your life, and you will make your own decisions in the light of your understanding!"
That was both profoundly pessimistic on one level, and life enhancing on the other. I find it has strengthened my response to life, and indeed steered me away from some fairly conventional decisions as well. For a prime example - no children, nor any intention of having any ...
I shall continue to live life as I see fit [guided in many ways by great wisdom accepted as a priori for certain as well], and if riding a bike or smoking shorten my life, or Fate for that matter, then so be it. I shall be gone before the worst of the inevitable and impending catastrophe really bites ...

Dear Don,
I am without doubt in a rather small minority. For the catastrophe to be avoided, I need to be in a rather larger minority!
Moderation in all things ... at least on the macro scale.

Life will go on. I wonder if any other species will screw the planet up like we have?
