Looking for advise on where to buy DVD's

Posted by: Chris Brandon on 01 December 2001

Guys,

I am just about to aquire a DVD player from a work colleage.(offered it to me at a good price)

I am looking for advise on where to buy DVD's from at "decent" prices. (something along the lines of what www.cd-wow.com does for ordinary music cd's).

Any recommendations ?

Regards

Hey thats timely. Finaly caved-in today and decided to dip a toe in the DVD water. I thought I would rely initially on renting DVDs from the local Blockbuster store. At this stage I'm not too familiar with the various formats available for any given film. Ideally I would want all DVDs that I watch to be in 16:9 or cinemascope with Dolby Digital/DTS. Not sure yet how usual (or unusual) that requirement is and if I'm likely to be satisfied with what I can pick-up at the video store.

Eventually I may end up going down the purchase route from a DVD specialist.

Hey I had a pleasant surprise not too long ago.

Our local library stocks a rather large collection of (mostly current) DVD's!

You can hire them for £1.80 a week and upto 3 at a time too.

Check it out - y'never know?

You need to find a region comparison site.

Dave,

Would you care to recommend one. I've not really considered this regional variation yet.

So far I get the impression that most DVDs are anormorphic and its the responsibility of the DVD player to re-format that if you need to view on a 4:3 TV. Most discs also seem to be at least 5.1 Dolby Digital.

It all seems a far cry from the days of renting/buying films on VHS where widescreen formats and HiFi/Surround soundtracks were the exception found only on special editions.

From my experience, the best place is www.play.com they are cheap, free delivery and have most titles in all of the time...both R1 and R2 so you can get everything.

I use them frequently and have had no problems whatsoever...

Chris,

I have used "dvdboxoffice" in the past and always found it a good service. Obviously most of the disks are R1.
