Help, Tweaters making wierd noise

Posted by: Markus on 05 April 2002

I know I'm going to get all kinds of S**T on this thread 'cause for some reason some folks don't like the kind of speakers I'm using, but here goes--

My Apogee Centaurus minor speakers have developed a sibilance on a very limited frequency range in the upper treble. The ribbon tweeters do not appear to be damaged so my question is, could an aging component in the crossover account for this kind of deterioration in the sound? It sounds like cartridge mistracking, but it isn't since I heard it when using the cd player. These speakers are about 10 years old. And yes, I'm open to the possibility that the tweeters are damaged in a way that is not readily visible to my untrained eyes...

Please don't recommend that I go get a CDX to solve this problem.. big grin

Thanks for any technical help,

Markus

Hi Markus:

Sounds like a cold solder in the X-over or the tweeter itself.

Well, it may be a tube that has become microphonic in my amplifier.

This weekend I was able to borrow a solid state amp from a local dealer it appears to fix the problem. Or I should say significantly reduce it. The cd still sounds very very poorly recorded and rough. It's amazing!

So it may be that the cd is somewhat uniquely bad, causing the microphony in the tube at that very limited frequency.

Anyone here have experience with microphonic tubes? How can I elimate this problem? Will replacing the tube do it?

Thanks for any advice,

Markus

Hi,

They are all microphonic to some extent as I found out long ago fixing TVs and they deteriorate, can't see the point in using them my self, hang on they do look pretty ;-).
