Dear Colleagues,

I'm looking for CDs - or LPs - for “famous” Arias for Bass or Bass-Baritone.
Any recommendations ?

Thanks and regards

Check out Mozart's Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd.

uem, you need to hear Tito Gobbi.

I don't know where you're based but amazon.uk have a 2CD EMI set called "The Very Best of Tito Gobbi" available for just under £7.

Acquire and enjoy that, then think about buying the famous EMI recording of Puccini's Tosca with Callas, di Stefano and Gobbi and the La Scala orchestra conducted by Victor de Sabata.

Good luck!

Thanks for your replies,

Well, the "serious" music lover would of course buy the whole operas.
But I like some sort of "best of..." sampler.

Incidentally, any soprano or tenor worth her / his salt has typically a CD or LP collection of arias or such.
What about the "Deep & Low" singer-fraternity ??

uem, the Gobbi set is exactly that, a sort of "greatest hits" of the repertoire: buy with confidence!

Here's a thought. Why not download Spotify if you haven't already - then do a search on such as:

Mache dich mein herze rein (Bach St Matthews Passion - about 9 different performances)

Why do the Nations? / The People that Walked in Darkness (Handel Messiah)

O Isis Und Osiris ( Mozart The Magic Flute) (currently listening to Jaakko Ryhanen singing the part of Sarastro = what a wonderful bass voice he has!)

Putting in "Bass Arias" gives you a long list - starting with the guy named above.

These are just a couple of sugestions, but once in Spotify you should find some absolute gems. The great thing is you are given access to a range of recordings for any chosen search. From here you should be able to identify the albums and artists that are to your taste.
