Blu-Ray and AV2 anyone??
Posted by: clanky on 15 July 2008
Now that the 'war' is over, ive been considering buying a blu-ray player. Has anybody any experience of interfacing one with an AV2? Is it worth it considering you have to use the onboard processor or do the visuals outweigh any loss of sound quality? (if any?) or should i just stick with my current upscaling player?
Adam, anything in the pipeline for an AV3 or a HDMI upgrade on an AV2? (pretty please!!)

Yes, Yes (no loss, much gain if you use the player's decoding or just core dts/DD) and No.

Hi tonym, thanks for your answer..very succinct and to the point!
Im not an expert but 'core dts/DD'..does this mean that BR players also have a digital coax output as well? i just presumed that it would be HDMI (and therefore HD sound) only.
How can you be so sure as regards Naim's future intentions? am i missing something here? Ive been reading through past threads on BR and i cant find any mention of Naim's direction in the future.

Apparently Tonym's speculation about Naim's intentions has resulted in a bout of word culling!

Not sure exactly what I posted, but AFAIR it was pretty innocuous!
In answer to your question clanky, BluRay players do indeed have a digital out, some coax, some optical, some both. The Core DD/dts stream is at a higher bitrate than with DVD (plenty of room to store it on the disc) so it sounds better anyway, without going to the lossless sound formats which will need to be decoded by the player, and often, due to inadequacies in their speaker configuration options, can sound worse than the core formats anyway.

Hi Tonym,
Now that i reread your reply, i can see Adam has indeed edited it. A pity he couldnt shed light on Naims future intentions as regards the Blu-ray debate as i cant be the only AV2 owner considering upgrading, particularly as my local rental shop now stocks Blu-ray discs......Any comments, Adam??.
Tonym,I take it from your response you have some insider knowledge?
Also, off the top of your head, are Blu-ray discs region encoded? is this easy bypassed?

No insider knowledge, just a bit of deduction.
BR discs are indeed region encoded, and as yet there's no way to overcome this. However, most of the disc producers (with the exception of Sony, for obvious reasons!) don't bother with the region codes. There are various websites you can go to which list the code status of all current releases.

Sorry, but my curiosity has got the better of me. What info are you basing these deductions on, Tony? or is your crystal ball better than mine??!!??
Nice site, Charles..spot on. Hopefully though my local rental shop will keep adding stock so i shouldnt have to buy that many.
If any other AV2 owners wish to add their experience regarding Blu-ray then please do.....

As my previous post has been partly deleted, I can't really reply, only to reiterate what I've already stated.

Hmmm...if memory serves me well, you merely pointed out that my thread was placed in the wrong section and that was the part Adam removed from your original answer.....go on, be brave and lets hear your theories!!
