Help me choose a 42" TV please

Posted by: Richard Adams on 15 June 2007

I'm in the market for a new TV and based on room dimensions the appropriate size for TV is 42".

I'm utterly confused about what features and resolutions I need. I'm also unsure whether LCD or plasma is best.

I don't watch many television programmes per se but I do watch a lot of sport and films. The films I watch will be viewed via my Arcam DV79 (possibly n-Vi in future). I'm unlikely in the foreseeable future to change to Blu-Ray or HD DVD.

At the same time as getting the new TV I will upgrade my cable package to V+ so I can watch sport in HD.

So for me the most important feature is how the screen handles motion whilst watching sport. Any suggestions would be helpful.

I'd settle for Freeview just delivering all the usual SD channels right now! (See my other thread!)

Chaps

I too am very taken with the Panny PX70 screen.

Pardon me if this is an idiot/newbie question but how far away should one sit from a 37in and a 42in. screen. I presume the type of signal you have will make a difference?

FWIW, I doubt I will be getting HD until it is available on some sort of freeview. I do not watch films/DVD etc.., just want a big telly!

Julian

ps - sorry to hijack your thread Richard

The new Pioneer G8 plasma is fabulous. The 427 was good, but the new G8, with its higher contrast and better motion is another major step forward. I reckon it leaves other plasmas floundering.

It's also far more acceptable with SD broadcasts, which still constitute the majority of most people's viewing.

Oh Frank, for heaven's sake! Now that my Fraim is as well-populated as I can get it I am not going to give in to plasmalust! My PX60 has to go on for a bit longer yet. (Note to self: do not listen to the camberley siren....)

Chris,

I held back, and back, and back...and gave in! I know the Pioneers are a lot more money than all the other screens (apart from B&O perhaps), but the new G8 is sickeningly good.

That said, with all this talk of Freeview HD, one wonders whether one should actually wait until plasmas appear with tuners built-in for reception of these channels (if they can already do so, my apologies...).

The G8's are a big step up from the 7's. However, they are still not as good as the Fujitsu's, specifically the 58 series.

If you get the Hitachi brand in the UK then keep an eye out for their new plasma range later this year...1920 x 1080

I have been very impressed with their current 1080i range so the full 1080p panel should be good as well. Very good scalers and menu's that are easy to use and setup.
