Serve (&HDX?)- Music Indexing
Posted by: Obsessed1 on 26 September 2010
I'm loving my new UnitiServe. Brilliant piece of kit, and it sounds as good as most CD players IMO. The user interface also is great.
I have one question on music indexing, though. Right now I have a lot of artists starting with "T", because "The Clash", "The Shins", "The Damned" etc. all are filed under "T".
Is there some (easy) way to change this?

You can do this through the Desktop client application on the CD that came with your UnitiServe.
Scroll down to the album by the artist you want to rename, right click and you'll see the option 'rename' (album) and just below it 'rename artist'

It would be nice if Naim would make it possible to ignore the "The" in artist names. I've renamed a couple of artists, but I found it so unnatural to listen to a band called "Clash, The" that I've changed them all back...
Something for the next software update??

Agreed 100% that this would be a nice feature.
In the PC software world, MediaMonkey ignores the "The" by default, but I have not found a way to make J River Media Center do this. Frustrating, because I agree that having an overcrowded "T" bucket is annoying!

Hi Hook
Try this in J River Media:
Options / Tree & View / Sorting / Ignore articles (a, an, the)

These issues are exactly why for some people there can be no substitution for using a mature, established media player on a PC/Mac.
Does anyone know if the Serve can be set-up as a Client as well? So I could use Foobar as the Server?

I've done this with iTunes, so I assume you can do it with Foobar. However, you cannot write to the Serve from iTunes (ie edit filenames), so presumably you won't be able to from Foobar either. But if you copy the ripped files over to a another drive, then no problem. I was told that you need a username and password to see the wav files on the Serve, but I haven't encountered this.quote:Does anyone know if the Serve can be set-up as a Client as well? Thank you so much Aleg! The Rolling Stones are much happier in their new home...the "R"'s!

Nice to know it can be fixed in some applications. It's only a minor point in an otherwise delightfully flaw-free interface (something I can't say for Pure Music). Seems like a fix in a future software upgrade would be the best solution.

I used Desktop Client to edit all my "A ..."'s and "The ..."'s ...
... I am *THAT* pedantic!
The only "The ..." I still have now is "The The".

Regardless of how many "The" artists there are, if they call themselves "The Who" or "The Cure", they will be in the T's in my library. Whatever they put on the cover of their album will be the artist tag. Unless, like a few obscure bands, they used "The", then dropped it, or vice versa.
Also, I personally dont naturally think of "W" when I ponder "The Who".
Changing the artist tags to "Who" or "Cure" would be even more disturbing to me.
I guess I would get along with that particular idiosyncrasy of the Serve.

Fortunately, the "Ignore Articles" option in JRMC does not change "The Rolling Stones" to "Rolling Stones".
It simply causes "The Rolling Stones" to show up after "Rodrigo Y Gabriela" and before "Sam Cooke" in my list of artists.
Which is exactly the way, uh-huh, uh-huh, I like it...

Totally! I was referring to Phil's comment.

Mine are all now renamed as "Who, The" or "Flock Of Seagulls, A"...
