For bringing the music of Janacek to a wider audience we owe him our eternal thanks.
To hear him conduct this great music was a privilege.
Andrew.

....and for much else besides. His achievements were many and varied, and his performances were first rate.

yep, often a highlight at the Edinburgh Festival, he'll be missed by many up here.

That's awfully sad. I attended his complete Brahms symphony cycle at the Festival Hall with the Phiharmonia a couple of years back, at around the time that his performances with the Scottish CO were released on CD. I remember posting here at the time to say that I thought that the wrong performances had been released.
Awfully sad, though.

Recent highlights for me were a sublime Makropulos Case at ENO a couple of years ago and an Elgar Symphony No.1 with the Philharmonia at the Festival hall last year which moved me to tears. Will be much missed.

That is truly sad news, Nearly my entire collection of Leos Janáček's works were conducted by Sir Charles and they just sound wonderful. Makropulos Case is superb - well all the discs I've collected featuring Sir Charles over the years are.
RIP Sir Charles.

yeah I've seen him in LA. Anybody to promote Janacek is a hero to me.

He will be sadly missed. His recording of Dvorak's Serenade for Strings has always been one of my favorites and having persauded Mrs Lutyens of the same we played it at our wedding.
I will be inspecting my collection for his other records to give them a spin.

Late in life, Mackerras made some terrific records of Mozart concertos, with Alfred Brendel. These recordings are for me the highlight of his vast discography. Although... let's not forget Rusalka! (note: still have to get acquainted with most Janacek)
