Selling vinyl, how ?
Posted by: Trevor Warwick on 08 May 2002
Any recommendations on how to get rid of my old vinyl & earn a little money from it rather than just chucking it in the bin ?
Ebay ? Take it to a shop (where?) ? Car boot ? Anyone here want to make an offer ?
It's late 70s/early 80s punk/indie stuff - about 60-70 '45s and 20-30 LPs (e.g., buzzcocks, jam, ramones, smiths, cocteaus, you get the idea)
Advice gratefully received.

Trevor,
The value of Lp's can vary from area to area and according to local tastes. When I was up in Seattle it seemed that Punk stuff could sometimes be fairly valuable. Here in St. Louis it seems less so. I suggest you search for a few of your items on ebay, particularly closed auctions, to see what the world market of collectors thinks its worth. Selling on ebay is a hassle so you might want to find an easier way like one of the interested souls on this thread.
Don't expect to get ebay prices anywhere else in the world, though. Store will typically pay about 25% of what they will sell a record for, collectors may do the same or a little better. Also, convenience and ease of selling is worth something, so be greatful if you're able to sell the lot all at the same time.
While choice albums can fetch quite a bit, common ones can be almost worthless. My dealer in Seattle had boxes and boxes of immaculate 70's, 80's-90's stuff going for .25 each. Thats 25 cents!!!
Good luck,
Marku

I live in Denver and frequent the local used Lp shops pretty regularly. I see stacks of late 70s and early-to-mid 80s stuff going for ridiculous prices -- especially the 12" singles and popular dance fare. ($14.99 for some Depeche 12" stuff, $9.99 for Duran Duran, $12.99 for Black Flag, etc). Even some pretty common easly E. Costello was going for $7-8, which seems high given you could find them lots of places for $3 or less not long ago. And most of it is selling typically within a few days. The store says it's older GenX'ers buying back their old collections for nostalgia, and teenagers digging into that stuff like it's new. Go figure.
