Thanks Steve. Got his anthology playing as I write this. The dvd of his "To Tulsa and back' tour is very good if you are a fan.

Yep, been a fan since The Old Grey Whistle Test did something on him way back when. Got all the early stuff on vinyl and the later stuff on Cd, heck I've even got

Smile

If you fancy trying to book him for a show then e-mail tomg at rosebudus.com or wander over here

I've been leaning on people but no news on what the documentary is yet - or could it be an In Concert?

Good news Steve.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Have loved his music for years saw him in concert many moons ago where he sat all through the gig, sometimes with his back to the audience. How much does that say to you that the music is all important and not the artist.

Got a white label single somewhere that was never issued by Island of him and his missus singing on the back porch of his house.

I first heard him on Whispering Bob's Radio1 show when "Naturally" was released. I was hooked from the first song. Saw him at a theatre in Victoria in 1977, when the band stood in a semicircle and JJ took no limelight whatsoever. Saw him at Hammersmith in '94 on the Closer To You tour (still wear the T shirt!) and he was much more comfortable centre stage. Bob Harris was there and supposedly the show was taped for future transmission by the BBC, but I never heard it.
Have every album on vinyl (Naturally twice - the first one wore out!) not that I have a way to replay them at the moment. Also have everything on CD plus the various anthologies, compilations and dvd's.
But not the white label single!! (Grrrr!)

Only JJ Cale album I've got is Cajun Moon and it is rather good - perhaps I should listen to another album. I'll definitely try to tune in to the show.

That's a song on the "Okie" album ROTF! I fear you are amongst a slick of JJ Anoraks here! (Not sure of the collective noun!)

Thanks Chris - of course, you're right that's the album I've got. It's one of the vinyl ones that is definitely in my glad I bought it section.

Each album is good. Also, in the case of the early ones, pretty short! Even by vinyl standards they were short. Not a man given to flooding the market with product, JJ has always veered to quality over quantity. The anthology "Any Way the Wind Blows" is not exhaustive but does have 2 CDs of essential JJ cuts.

I did not want to put it like that Chris!

To Tulsa And Back
Documentary which follows Tulsa-born cult musician JJ Cale on the road in the part of the US in which he grew up and which gives his music its unique tone. Perhaps best-known for songs that Eric Clapton made famous - After Midnight and Cocaine - Cale and his longserving touring band ride through the American West, across Oklahoma where Cale was born, visiting the dance halls and cities that made him. With observations from Clapton, manager and agent Mike Kappus and Cale's backing musicians.

That's the BBC blurb - so it does sound pretty much like the DVD Frown

Pity. Still it's damned fine documentary for those who haven't seen it.

Thanks Bazz - I'll investigate, seems a bit hard to get hold of in the UK.

Steve - Thanks, I've ordered it 50 tracks for under £6 - who needs iTunes with value like that.

An amazing bargain! Enjoy it.

Another vote for 'Anyway the Wind Blows'. A cracking compilation. I particularly like the (otherwise unreleased) track 'Durango'.

I'll second (at least)that. Not sure how I managed to miss out on him for so long.

Glad you like him Howard. Wonderful music to my ears. And a really genuine human being too.
