yes she was a class act of the old school, naughty and nice. On film check out St Louis Blues, bio from the late 50s I think of WC Handy, she was the chanteuse in a bar that coaxes Handy. but the cast is stellar. Nat King Cole as Handy, Pearl Bailey, Mahalia Jackson. Wonderful movie.
I saw her in a night club around '90 in Los Angeles, one of those expensive nights, but well worth it as she was about 15 feet away. Every song she sang and every word in every line was delivered with intimacy and power. She could make you chuckle and tear up with the twist of a word. The current crop of singers can't do that.
Gawd bless her for standing up in the 60s and walking away with her head up.

Yes, she wasn't afraid. A letter in the LA Times was from a manager who knew her manager and was looking for jobs for her in the 80s. So he started trying to get TV and small film roles. He was turned down and only one producer fessed up that if he did he wouldn't get jobs sent his way. So this guy found her work in Mexico, Asia and Europe. Said she was a great woman and held her head high, never apologized for her convictions about race and Vietnam.
Yes she was quite something to behold on stage, every word and nuance counted. I have one CD of hers. I'll play it when I get home.
