n-vi no sub - what happens to the LFE?
Posted by: DJ on 21 August 2007
I have n-vi, 52, 135s, SBLs, n-cent & cheap small rears(!), no sub.
Front speakers are set to 'large ext', centre to 'large', rears to small, sub to 'none'
Anybody know on 5.1 stuff what happens to the LFE bass?
I searched and can't find anything. Thanks David

Thanks. Seems that it depends how Naim have implemented the LFE options in Dolby (& ? dts).
Maybe Naim would comment or I'll email?

In a 5.0 system, when no subwoofer is declared, the LFE information gets routed to the front loudspeakers, typically.

We are contractually obliged to follow Dolby and DTS guidelines...
(Manuals, what are they??)

Which are???
And Munch (hello) you must have a diferent manual to me?!
I am one of those sad people who read manuals before using new stuff (irritates the hell out of the rest of the family!). There are some rather vague tables and not much else - unless I'm going mad or suffering selective blindness. It doesn't say that without a sub LFE goes through front L & R speakers or that a pseudo sub is created via front L & R speakers etc. Or anything relating to a 5.0 set up.

The LFE channel is an effects channel only–in a 5.0 system, it gets folded down onto the LR fronts at such a reduced level that it's largely irrelevant–the spec will be implemented in the same manner across a range of players.
This channel carries no musical information.
In a stereo-only player, the LFE channel is discarded–again, defined by the spec and not by the machine.
Were separate sections on every possible speaker configuration included in the manual, this would extend it ad nauseum–your dealer is, as always, a valuable resource as regards system setup and configuration.
