best layed plans of mice and men

Hiya,
I am just planning the wiring etc for our new house, and as I have a room especially set-up for my audio ( Naim)/ visual and computer equipment I had assumed I would be able to get audio to my speakers (@ 12-15 m away) fairly easily (I do not want any equipment in my listening room) - I have now looked into the Naimnet solution, but that will not do it, I don't want to get rid of my CD5X and Supernait for a uniqute etc, so it seems that the worlds longest cable run may be the only solution, but I am concerned about loss of quality over that distance - does anyone on the forum use a long speaker cable run and can they give me any advice please
Thanks
Barrie

I am a little confused, if you have a room set up for audio, why do you need 15 metre runs, is it like a really really big room?

Good question, the A/V stuff will be in a central room downstairs (along with domotics, computers, servers etc) and the speakers will be in a different room upstairs. I may have been a bit generous with 12-15m but the cables have to go from the naim units, up a wall to ceiling height then across two rooms ( @ 1x3m and 1x5m at ceiling level and then go up through a concrete floor to where the speakers will be set-up and I need some spare cable to position them, thats about the best I can describe it I hope I haven't confused further

OK so you want just speakers in your listening room, and everything else down stairs.
COuld be a bitch to change CD. I don't see that the sound will change with longer runs, and I am sure people here use 10m plus, but do check.
Personally I would have an audio/video streaming server etc down stairs and clients about the house. BUt this requires hifi in the room.

Barrie,
I have my secondary system set-up where the length of the speaker cables runs from the amp back through the wall and under the floor of the same room. I don't remember the exact length, but it is at least 30 feet and there is no problem.
Word of caution!! If you do this then make sure you have a single run from your amp--> speaker DIRECT. The reason is that usually in these types of setups through walls and floors there are additional terminations which are used as intermediaries to run from let's say the amp to the wall or floor and then a second wire from the wall/floor to the speaker. This will degrade your sound.
I'd also run this in some PVC pipe as a chase if ever you need to pull the cables out for repair or to change them to NACA 6. You'll regret this if you don't.

Well presumably with the tech you will emply you will have an awesome NAs server downstairs as well and an Ipod Tpich in hand. Volume will still be an issue though. I guess you have that covered.

Put a closet in. Behind a door in the room is not a convenience problem and still isolated.

Actually Barrie the best solution is to have your "kit" in your listening room and then have everything else located elsewhere and connected by ethernet and wifi. This way PC/Mac, NAS, server are stored away from the music devices and listening room. The cable runs of CAT5e or CAT6 are irrevlevant.
If you ever wanted to go with NS01 this can be put in your central region and ethernet connect to other locations.

I encourage you to get in contact with a certified Naimnet installer. A NS01 in a closet somewhere with a NAS drive if you have a large collection of cd. Just a NNP01 in your listening room with your speakers and a panel like an I-touch or the coming I-Pad and you are done.

Hi All,
Thanks for your ideas, I have already contacted a supplier ref Naimnet, so I will see how this goes, just out of interest can an NNP01 handle all digital resolutions ie Naim hi-res downloads ?
Cheers

Barrie, this is from Naimnet. Unless anything has changed while the NS01 can stream 24 bit, but the NNP01 can only handle wav/mp3 (16/44). I think I recall DD saying that the limitation was in the Digilinx protocols, but I do not know if these have been updated.
From my perpspective, the NNP01 etc... really only works if your setting up a secondary audiophile room to stream wav. A real shortcoming that it doesn't or appears to still not handle 24 bit.
The NS01 will distribute to different rooms and at that point a Uniti/Unitiqute in a secondary room might be a nice solution.

Seems if you want to stream, the best way is to go with the NS01 (to which you can add the DAC) and again put these in the music room, and have the computer based stuff in the central area connected by ethernet.
If you want to distribute to secondary areas for casual listening there are much cheaper solutions than going with the NNP01.
Not sure why you are averse to having the "kit" in the room. I have my TV wall mounted with my Naim gear in-between the speakers (doesn't have to be) and it looks great, especially since I'm using a 3 shelf Fraim to keep things low to the ground.
Everything else is kept in a central hub which connects to the HDX by ethernet.
If you audition the NS01 (+/- DAC) and if you like what this does, then you can always trade in the CD5x towards the NS01 and move on from here.
Controlling the NS01 wirelessly with an iphone/itouch, netbook PC is really easy and convenient.

Hi Gary,
I have heard from my Naimnet contact and you are correct about the NNP01 on all counts, I think your suggestion ref the Unitiqute with an NS01 is the best solution until a high(er) level streamer/amp come onto the scene.
I will see if I can get a demo set-up
