Watching dvd's in stero

Posted by: mickey on 01 January 2006

Hello all,

Seeking a bit of advice about adding a dvd5 to a naim system.

I want to get the dvd5 first then add av2, power amps and speakers later, is it possible to watch the DVD’s in stereo through my existing system?

Or am I right in saying that the DVD signal is output in digital and I need a processor to convert this?

Thanks

If the DVD5 outputs anything like any other DVD player I've owned you can get it to "down-mix" to 2.0 or stereo in hi-fi language. So you shouldn't require a processor.

Unless you have a DAC and set DVD to play in PCM then the digital output will require a processor, I run my DVD player through my naim system but take the digital out through a DAC (48kHz required) set to PCM (pulse code modulation)

or as Jay says you should be able to get the analogue signal downmixed to stereo

There are a couple of 2 channel analogue outputs on the DVD5. There are a set of RCA/Phono sockets with Ch1/Ch2 and also the scart socket has a Ch1/Ch2 output.
You could use the Scart connection for RGB picture/L+R audio to your TV as I do and the RCA/Phono sockets connected to your stereo if you want a fuller sound. The rear connections are shown on page 14 of the DVD5/AV2 manual available on Naim web site under Products / Manuals.
Hope this is helpfull.

Hi Mickey

I only use the DVD5's stereo out and the sound is outstanding. There is a problem with the latests software upgrade if there is no stereo track on the disc but Adam tell me this will be sorted early this year.

Stereo is often dismissed for Dolby pro logic sound, but many films and TV programs are shown in stereo or mono, generally with films pre Dolby, but also current TV progs and if watching music that is mostly in stero it often sound better (I'e a better front sound field) as plain stereo than using a derived 5.1.

Then again I've a couple of sterio videos that work in pro logic. If your amp has a effect on/off button use it - it can be a surprise what happens.

I watch dvd in stereo and will keep this unless I am able to get a dozen nap 500 to have multi channel multi amplified system.

When I am investing in audio-video, I think budget and I will always prefer a better stereo system than any multi chanel, which of course is less quality on more component.

mickey,

The DVD5 can perform the mixdown to 2-channel. I think this is on by default. So this means a standard DVD5 can be used to mixdown DVDs so you can watch them on a stereo system.

Hi,

As many members have already stated correctly, the DVD5 will output stereo downmixed audio via the RCA, 5 pin din and also the SCART (pins 1 and 3)outputs.

Note though that the levels on the SCART are slightly lower than the RCA/DIN outputs (if memory serves me correctly...). This is not a fault, but due to the standard that SCART audio is set to (0.5v RMS).
