Who do you sleep with?

Posted by: erik scothron on 24 February 2006

Every night this week I have taken Cecilia Bartoli to bed and she sings me to sleep with 'Amarilli, mia bella' - by Guilio Caccini - written in 1601 and sublimely beautiful. Who do you sleep with? Winker

Sweetdreams,

Tonight it will be the Shipping Forecast, but sleep will come tonight.

Unfortunately, the long dead German male JS Bach is my solid bedtime companion, as his harpsichord music is hardly likely to annoy the neigbours! The trouble is it usually takes the second CD for me to loose concentration, and go to sleep. Other wise it is hopeless sometimes.

Good night from Fredrik

Weren't the Goldbergs written for that purpose (however, I have only the Glenn Gould recording and his grunting isn't the kind of thing you fall to sleep to).

They don't work for me, unless I nod off at the reaxation into the final statement of the aria, some hour and a quarter after the start! If I get to the end, the only solution is something like the Chromatic Fantasy! Fredrik

Tam,

I think that Bach had Ito Ema in mind when he thought of putting someone to sleep with the Goldbergs. Try it and tell me if you heard a better piano recording than that:

I think this has one of the most attractive CD covers I have seen - I hope the contents are as good.

Cheers Haim.

Erik,

I basicly own the whole catalog of MA recordings (around 70 CDs). Their music (mostly world and jazz) is great, their recordings (two points) are superb and their covers are tastefully designed. You cannot go wrong with any of their discs.

Hi Haim,

I was impressed with their website and catalogue - small but well chosen - of course you cant judge a book by its cover (or CD) but I liked what I saw and I don't doubt I will be sampling some soon. Many thanks.

There's usually plenty of music in my head already when I go to sleep, but our six year old daughter loves to fall asleep to music, and her current favorites are:

A Recital of Intimate Works, Vol.1 & 2 - Andrew Rangell

One Quiet Evening - Pat Metheny

Come Away With Me - Norah Jones

Forget About It - Alison Krauss

The Melody At Night, With You - Keith Jarrett

And, of course, something from her daddy:

Remember the River - Fred Simon

All best,
Fred

I've asked Tracey Thorn, but her husband did not like the idea.

Tam,

Before tabbing down to your post, I was embarrassed to admit that I go to sleep with the Goldbergs (Angela Hewitt's). So as not to disturb the wife, I listen to the iPod when sleep does not come easily, and I usually only get through about the fourth variation. Funny though, when I listen to the CD for enjoyment, I am riveted to the performance. Go figure.

Hi Haim,

Could you possibly post your top 4 or 5 choices? I was intrigued by your recommendation of the Ito Ima CD in the Goldberg thread yesterday, but didn't act on it after seeing the myriad choices on the web site. I would like to order the Ito Ima CD, but would like to get more bang for my shipping charge buck by sampling other choices.

Thanks in advance.

Norman,

Just don't try it with Gould! When I first heard this story, the better part of a year ago, when coincidentally I was having a little trouble sleeping and I put it to the test, but his grunting got in the way a little.

I must pick up the Hewitt recording at some point - about six months ago she had some Bach keyboard concerti on the cover disc of Gramophone - normally I find these works sound totally unnatural when not on the harpsichord but she was utterly convincing.... I also love what I've heard of her Chopin nocturnes which (it occurs to me, are possibly not bad to go to sleep with - though I've never tried it).

BTW, I also have A. Hewitt playing the English Suites, which is wonderful. Should get the French Suites next. So much music, so little time...

Norman,

Here are some of the MA CDs which I find exceptional:

*The Piano Music of Alberto Ginastera Vol 1 / Eduardo Delgado - contemporary classical music
*Man From Plovdiv / Milcho Leviev, piano - blues/jazz
*Further Attempts / Todd Garfinkel - piano jazz trio
*The Splendour of Al-Andalus / Calamus - world music from Andalusia, Spain
*Sera Una Noche - world music from Argentina
*Buenos Aires Madrigals / La Chimera - world music from Italy & Argentina
*Krushevo / Vlatko Stefanovski, guitar - world music from Macedonia

Let me know please how you find the music,

Regards,

Haim

Norman,

I don't know your taste in music, so I listed a little of everything. MA has also some unconventional stuff (like 'The Antenna Repair Man'), so if you have some time I would suggest that you read about it and audition the music.
Todd Garfinkel, the owner of MA lives in Japan and his father Chuck runs the US business from California. If you prefer, you can call and talk to him . He has been very helpful to me. Around Christmas time they put their whole catalog on sale, and that is when you can save $3-$4 on every disc.

Hi Haim,

Thanks again. I had not noticed that short sound samples were available. I will certainly use those to guide my choices. I might very well also Give Mr. Garfinkel a call. Gotta say that the Bach sounds pretty good on the cheap computer speakers.

Call me fickle but I've kicked Cecilia out of bed tonight and I'm tucked up with Alison Hagley singing some Mozart.
