Who do you sleep with?

Posted by: erik scothron on 24 February 2006

Every night this week I have taken Cecilia Bartoli to bed and she sings me to sleep with 'Amarilli, mia bella' - by Guilio Caccini - written in 1601 and sublimely beautiful. Who do you sleep with? Winker

Sweetdreams,

Erik

Listen and enjoy. Alone, with wife, children, girlfriend... You can listen to extracts on Amazon.

Mark, Erik

I agree though I much prefer the performance of the: 'Trois Morceaux apres des hymmes byzantins' the way they are played on his Akroasis album on solo piano.

Morton Feldman / Piano and String Quartet / Nonesuch

This magnificent music can put to sleep even fully dressed up people who are nowhere near their beds. I put it on a lot when I read.

Haim,

I think "Chants, Hyms and Dances" is as much, if not more so, about the composer(s) - Gurdjieff & de Hartman. Keith Jarret (among many others) was strongly influenced by Gurdjieff.

Who composed "Trois Morceaux apres des hymmes byzantins"?

Mark,

Part of the Akroasis album is based on five traditional Byzantine hymns arranged by Vassilis Tsabropoulos and played on the piano by him.
Three of them appear in your album.

Dear mark and Haim,

I am humbled. I thought I knew a little about Gurdjieff but was only dimly aware he ever wrote any music but I have great respect for his spiritual writings. I know a little about Keith Jarret but have never heard of Sacred Hymns. I listened to the samples of 'Chants, Hymns & Dances' as per Mark's suggestions and knew immediately I am going to love it - I listened to the sample of every track. Alas there were no samples of Akoasis but I shall surely buy both. It seems there is a small but rich seem of pure gold here waiting to be plundered and I shall dig into this whole area. Somebody poked fun at this thread the other day, someone with a sense of humour lobotomy maybe but I hope he has not had his heart removed too because I am sure listening to this work will make his heart better. Thank you both from the bottom of mine. Smile

All the best,

Erik

Norman,

I don't know your taste in music, so I listed a little of everything. MA has also some unconventional stuff (like 'The Antenna Repair Man'), so if you have some time I would suggest that you read about it and audition the music.
Todd Garfinkel, the owner of MA lives in Japan and his father Chuck runs the US business from California. If you prefer, you can call and talk to him . He has been very helpful to me. Around Christmas time they put their whole catalog on sale, and that is when you can save $3-$4 on every disc.

Regards,

Haim

Confirmed, MA is a real family business, and Garfinkle helped me personally when there was trouble with a package I had ordered, which was stuck in German customs.

cheers
Stefan

BBC Radio 3's 'Late Junction'. Such a wonderfully eclectic selection of music. I just wish I could stay up until midnight and listen to it on the hi-fi but I have to get up early to go to work.
