Tippett - A Child of Our Time
Posted by: Tam on 03 September 2008
I heard a performance of this last weekend at the Edinburgh festival and rather liked it - particularly the intermingling of the spirituals. It seems that I ought pick up a recording and get to know it better. I see Davis has done it several times (though to lukewarm reviews on the recent LSO Live effort). Hickox has Willard White, who I've heard in recital singing spirituals, so it seems like that might be a good bet. But I am open to suggestions.
Thanks,
Tam

Tam, as someone too who wishes to acquire this work, but doesn't know quite where to start, I'd suggest that Willard White is a pretty good jumping off point. Others may be able to home in more precisely to a particuler recording.

Hi
Having sung the work (in the chorus) several times, including the Polish premiere, I would say buying a recording of it on the strength of a soloist is a mistake. It is essentially a work for chorus and orchestra with soloists. It isn't a display piece for the soloists.
I would recommend Colin Davis's mid 70s recording on Philips, though I don't think there is anything to seriously complain about in more recent versions (on Haenssler Profil as well as the LSO label).

Just seen this recording is available as part of a 4 disc set of Tippett from MDT (www.mdt.co.uk) for £13.50. Absurdly good value.

Tam
try the Naxos with the composer conducting. Got to be worth a punt at £5.
