Life can be ****...

Posted by: Steveandkate on 04 March 2002

OK, so it´s a rare chance I get to log on, but I have to today..
Having moved to Spain, where I have had a dedicated music room built to house my new Naim system, and waited with it all boxed up for 6 months, I got to set it all up and unpack the music collection yesterday...
Whilst the system is all there and running in just fine, it seems that about 450 CD´s have disappeared...
As it was shipped out 8 months ago, and the cd´s stored for a further 6 months before, with the last 6 months spent in my house whilst work was done, what chance do I have with any insurance company...
Zilch.
So, I have treated myself to an hour in an internet cafe to catch up on the forum, and also to try my luck with the removal company...
So, life in the sun isn´t always so good..!
Still, what´s left of the music sounds bloody good, and will improve as it all warms up !

May your day be better,

Steve

Steve as you point out your chances may be slim, but one thing is for certain it won't cost anything to try. Do you have anyway to prove you had them before, \i don't know pictures or something, and were they insured with your house insurance.

With our insurance company the premium reflects the music as well, presumably if 400 of them went missing, (more than I own) feasbly you could say they were stolen, which wouldn't even be lying.

Its got to be worth a try.

What a pain in the arse eh? I hope they serve alcahol in your internet cafe.

...a report with the police usually doesn't hurt with the insurance company either.

Dear SteveandKate (it wasn't the Man with 2 Brains after all.It was All of Me - my mistake)

What an absolute downer folks.

I really, and sincerely, hope you recover your losses with interest.

Now BTW I know this might sound a trite flippant given your circumstance and all that but did you ever get to try that PS audio thing?

Steve

bummer. I feared this with all of my moves/years of storage... I guess I was just lucky. I have maintained a spreadsheet of CD's though, just in case I had to present it to an insurance co...

I follow the "no cheek, no christmas present" line - so do have a go! If you don't, you may always wonder "what if?". See what you can raise under your insurance policies.

If you paid insurance for the move, and for the storage - if the same number of cartons were received for storage, just be convinced they were there on arrival, and go the storage insurance policy (they must have been listed on the inventory, right?) - in life, you get what you negotiate.

Good luck!

I'm sure you have done this, but just in case....
Print out your spread sheet of your CDs. Chances are if your CD's get nicked, the PC will to.
Actually, you prolly have a backup.... don't you?

wink

Steve,

That is crap. Suggest you file a report with the police that the CDs are lost or stolen, most insurance companies need this to be done within a couple of days of discovery the loss. Then see how you do, 5K is worth chasing up after all!

cheers

yes to all of the above. Not wanting to tempt fate, but in my experience HDD failures are more common than PC thefts. frown

Dear Steve,

So you have moved to Spain.

I am jealous.

Where abouts are you living in spain and what are you doing for gainful employment.

Is there a hifi scene out there.

I hope to move to the Costa Del Sol sometime in the not too distant future and would love to know what there is in the way of hifi as it is my main out of office hours activity.
I am a frustrated loudspeaker builder, and would consider small scale manufacture there.

you can email me at:

Really appreciate your support through this painful loss..!
I am trying the insurance thing - will let you know !

P - never did get to try the PS Audio, due mainly to time pressure whilst in England before my move, but did get the house re-wired, and now have 3 phase electricity coming in to the house - don´t know too much what it means re the hi fi, but the sparkie said it was the business, though I don´t know how much he knows about anything..

It is bloody hard trying to work out what has gone missing, as most of the CD´s were recent purchases, so not old favourites ( having sold the house in England, there was a little cash floating around..)

Anyway, best advice seems to be to keep a list of all discs, and don´t move house !

Cheers !

Steve, at least you now live in beautiful sunny Spain.

Cds are much much cheaper in Spain, there is a mail order company in Barcelona called Planet Music which has outrageously low prices. I'll try and find their email and post it.

Johna

it's

www.planetmusic.es

Web site is awful but catlogue is great. email them

Tried to mail you - not possible !
I work in England still - just a few weeks a year ( I am an odd job man - but not that odd.. so not rich !)
No hi fi scene near me, but in big cities like Malaga, there may be a small interest, but doubt it !
Life here is cheap, easy, and full of quality, but it takes time to learn how to fit in - like waiting 4 weeks for the boiler repair man to come, so no hot water or heating...
If you need time to enjoy life, don´t need too much money, and can find a way of earning, then give it a try - we paid 70,000 Uk pounds for a huge old farm house with loads of land and fruit trees etc - houses still go for 40-50,000...
Good luck,

Steve
