Only SBLs?

Posted by: Tony Lockhart on 04 April 2001

I might be able to upgrade my speakers soon...at last. System at the moment is CDX,102,napsc,hi-cap,180. My Intros have done well but are a very obvious weak link. I love the sound of SBLs, but am wondering what other speakers are worth a demo. The main criteria are that they must work in a 13' by 13' room, against a wall, but not be too critical, and shouldn't look too 'different', eg like Shahinians! New only, upto around £2500. Any suggestions welcome.

Arrange a home demonstration if you can for Sbl's. I bet they don't go back! Your room sounds a perfect environment for them.

.... My setup is almost identical to yours. All the Naim kit is certainly, but my room is slightly larger.

If you fancy a listen to SBLs, your more than welcome.

Im on the Wirral.

Tony,

Wait until May, when Naim launch their new "Thingo" loudspeakers.

They are excellent, might even be better than the SBLs (you need a direct comparison there, and tell us all about it).

What's this then?

Is this the new speaker introduced recently as the "Vivo" (I thought this was a replacement for the Credo?), or something completely new?

Yes it is the "Vivo", however, they can not use that name (trademarked elsewhere).

Therefore, they have yet to decide on the name (hence "Thingo"). See the thread called 'Name that Frame' to join in the competition.

Sorry, zero waf! Will hang on though to listen and see in the flesh. Really is looking like the sbl. I'm glad it's looking that way.

Zero WAF? They're the same size and no more intrusive than SBLs.

In her words 'they look like Intros with a curved top'. Now believe it or not, Joanna was at least 50% of the upgrade driving force until we returned to the uk. Also, I trust her ears more than mine so when she hears the Thingies... who knows! BUT, SBLs in the right finish look serious and quite reserved at the same time. At least the choice is down to 2 now. Thanks.

All my base is coming soon.

Tony

I am using a pair of Ruark Equinox's with my Naim CDX/82/Hicap/180.

The Ruarks work very well with the Naim equipment. To quote what hifi "they don't get in the way of the music, they just play music very well".

I would reccomend them to anyone, but its your choice.

I have heard this from an official Naim source: the "Thingos" cannot be called "Vivos" because this is the name of a Benelux supermarket chain specialising in the cheap and nasty. Would you by a speaker called the Naim Woolies? big grin big grin
Try the B&W CDM 7 NTs (1200 GBP) or the '9 Nts (1750 GBP) as alternatives. They do need some clearance from rear walls. They are the first B&Ws to be Naim-friendly. However, The 7 NTs are not as tight in the bass as they should be though.

Try the 804N - very Naim friendly and seriously kick-ass with good Naim gear. Much better than CDM 7's and 9's all round, and (to my ears) better than SBL's. They work well in a smallish room though need to be about 2ft out from the back wall.

I'm sure you know that aside from the water-staining, a potplant atop SBL's would do little to enhance performance - the HF cabinet would hinge down and rest upon the bass driver box, in turn pressing this further into the up-facing spikes, necessitating a re-build (new pads), not to mention defeating the separate box principle, and arousing a little police interest along the way. I suggest such horticultural activites take place well away from your SBL's! You were intending getting some, right? big grin

As you say - resistance is futile

Please, only speakers that work very close to rear walls!!
