Like the Moonies

I originally only came onto the forum to find out some information about recapping. Since then I've upraded my amp, go mad in record shops, and spend hours reading the posts.
Is anybody else worried about the amount of time they spend on the forum. Am I normal or do I need to get out more?

Dear Nic,
I would be surprised that old Fritz would get too pissed off with me, but then an awful lot goes staright over my head! I hate upsetting people, so I better have a look to make sure I have not upset anyone.
Thanks for the head-up, from Fredrik
PS, I hope you really do draw something valuable from those records!

Dear Nic,
Don't panic! Fritz's Thread (of the day) is often a bit frought, but rarely does anyone get badly burnt! I withdrew when it got beyond me, and that is not so much the Thread as the very facts being touched on. His Threads are always very wide ranging, and move with lightning speed between topics often within just one post. Really, though blunt, he makes a good deal of sense on some days, and on the others, I just think I am too thick to keep up. Only the brave (or foolhardy like me) really post there!
All the best from Fredrik

Thankyou for the theory from such an eminent source.
I find that adding a cheery glow to my 180 on top of the CDP(standby)/Pre/Hicap instantly triples consumption to that of a once-common incandescent light bulb.
Of course in real terms it's all total idiocy. My computer is guzzling electrons for far more hours each day than is sensible or useful. For little other than childish amusement. But, like music, it makes me happy.
------------------------------------------------------
I cycle between mild amusement at Phritz' monologue and irritaton that he has set up his political soapbox in our village square. Incomprehension is not usually the problem. It's the "Why here?"
Mood is the deciding factor. It's probably as much his way of coping with a lack of conversation in his mother tongue as it is my own reason for spending far too many hours here myself.
But not this morning! I'm off to the quack to get a cure for my steam engine impressions. Enjoy the echoing silence while you can. Do try and be good Fredrik! Phritz will be keeping a motherly eye on all of you.

Dear Nime,
Aplogies for being a way off topic, but I always try to be good. Very occasionally I am derterminedly naughty in light hearted way, and ocassionally I simply fail when being serious! Nobody is perfect and I am surely a long wayfrom the list of Saints, though I do try!
Dear Nic
keep going with the beethoven (etc), and keep us (well me anyway) posted!

Fredrik,
Do not worry I am really enjoying the new discs. A lot to take in, but I have gained the willing listening participation of my wife, who plays piano and enjoys classical music, but just never buys any records. Already thinking of what to get next, so I have been going over some of your old threads. Last night I was only listening to Art Pepper because of the lateness of the hour.
It is also proving to be a very good way of roping my wife into the hifi thing, which until now she has dismissed as mildly obsessional behavior. The other day she complained that the kitchen hifi was crap, after listening to the main system. As she is the bread winner at the moment, it helps to have her onside.
Regards

Happy to spread the info a little wider.

"Once common", eh?
Word of caution - fluourescent bulbs put a lot of crap into the mains. They switch on/off 100 [or 200] times per second, each transition adding another burst of noise at just the point in the cycle where a Naim PSU draws current.
Presumably, the compact ones are just as bad as the old strip lights.
Also, I don't know if the startup coil puts additional impedance on the mains circuit.
cheers, Martin

I can hear no detrimental effects on the music depite a hovel-full of miniature flourescents. Though one can clearly see the effect of the computer over a weak terrestrial signal on the TV I have yet to detect any audible effect on the system. Other than the soft waterfall of low-noise cooling fans. Simply playing the music louder seems to drown this unwanted noise out quite easily.
It may even be a nonsense to run low-energy bulbs in the general scheme of things. Given the higher cost and poorer lighting performance one might as well accept the extra energy that goes into direct home heating by using the good-old-fashioned bulb.
