Best TV for under £1000

Looking to buy a new Plasma / LCD as it's been suggested my five year old panasonic CRT flat screen is looking dated. I was thinking 32" to 37" no bigger. But i went looking the other day and to be honest i got bored of looking - so i'm relying on your good advice to narrow down the search.

Stay with Panny, I'm very much enjoying the 37PX70 that I've just bought. The LCDs are good but at 37" the motion was better I found.

The panasonic px70 plasma is imo the best value tv at the moment.Best pic to price ratio by a fair margin.You shold be able to pic one up for around about £750 ish for the 37".

Is it the 37" you've got? You mentioned thew motion gets bertter - what do you mean?
What is it like with a standeard signal? As this is what i will be watching most of the time.
Nice looking set by the way - the Mrs has just said yeah yeah yeah - well she would at 37" !!!!

Hi there. i think what steve means is that lcd tv's suffer from motion blurring on fast action scenes and sports. basically they cant update the picture fast enough to keep up with the action. plasma tv's suffer from this far less and the panasonic is one of the best of the plasmas at the price range you are looking at.Crt still give the best picture on standard def signals but the panasonic has all but closed the gap completely and it's excels when you do feed a good signal ,be it hi def or from a standard def dvd player. hope that helps. There always is something better just on the horizion. When you do get round to raising the funds just check and see whats out again ,then at least you can get the best at the time.Don't get caught up on always waiting on the next best thing or all you will ever do is wait.Waiting aint as good as watching. Happy shopping .

ok so if i think the 37" is too big for my room do i go for the TX32LXD700? They are avaiable for £800 ish - looks bloody good too and the reviews i've read are favourable

well i went for the 37px70. Got it for £744 with ped and 5 year panasonic guarantee - Empire Direct.
Looking forward to setting it up. Any tips on burn in settings and which sockets to use for what. I have a telewest cable box and standard DVd player

These are likely to be unique to your room obviously, but given that the Panny comes with a pretty strident default...
Try "normal" picture setting, wind down the contrast to around 50%, brightness at about 75%, colour about 40% sharpness 50% (the default setting). Turn any picture noise reduction off along with "colour enhancement".
Those setting should give you a decent place to start and won't burn anything. I'm led to understand that this is less of a problem these days and provided you don't go mad with contrast/brightness on static displays (like games?) - it should not be an issue.

cheers Steve S1. Never really noticed the picture quality difference from channel to channel program to program but there is a big difference. just watching U21 footy match and its great - so that's me satisfied!!!!

Ok, now for what DVD player.
Current is the Toshiba SD260, and it was cheap and cheerful at the time but that blue power light is doing my head in and it's silver so it's got to go.
Do i go for the Smasung HD870 or the Toshiba SD 370 E. Can't have no blue LED's. but if the pic difference is big i'll concede on this point. Was going to connect via HDMI so if there is a cable recommendation also that would be great.

Although I prefer better/cheaper/longer-lasting/less power wasted (when you can get it) 4:3 CRT, is in fact possibly the best value flattie-widey not the BLACK 3-year warranty Aldi 47" 1080p???

I agree that this screen-size is outside the parameters quoted - I would recommend Evesham or Samsung or Pioneer (or even Panasonic with 5 yr warranty, or looking at John Lewis deals ...
As all the 'experts' - I haven't a clue - get cheapest/best which others will allow you to have, and get lucky (P.S. If you can avoid naff TV programmes - e.g. Eastenders/Cor.St. - even I gave up on it 18 months ago/greedy fat slimming fashion twat stuff)- so much the better.
Quite likely e.g. HD-Blu-Ray etc 7000 audio bad channel films on e.g. a DVD format are still rubbish films also.
I am not convinced that e.g. a dire film or footie match is any better if you pay more to watch it.
