PA speakers

Posted by: Rockingdoc on 06 July 2001

If a hi-fi forum can run 50 postings on digital photography (which is an abomination compared to silver-process b&w), perhaps it is o.k. to ask about Public Address speakers.
I'm on the look-out for some portable,high quality,full-range P.A.speakers to reproduce decent audio in larger rooms/small halls. Mainly for acoustic instruments and CD player (CDS2).
Bose 802s and Electro-Voice Stage 200s seem likely candidates.
Any other views?

... and most expensive is Turbosound. A terrible brand name, but a friend of mine (a professional of PA systems) swears only by that. And IMO he's right, last year we went to see Manfred Mann's Earth Band - they used just that, and besides attending an excellent performance, we were almost listening (outdoors) to actual HiFi. Truly exceptional, I think the investment is worth it. And they last forever anyway.

Most important, stay away from Bose - it can be considered another four-letter word and I don't exaggerate by saying they deliver just ear-crashing noise.

Disclaimer: this is only my point of view.

Very interesting.
I thought that Turbosound were an installation/hire outfit that used EV drivers in their own boxes, but I'll try and search for a website.
I know Bose domestic stuff is to be avoided, but dose this apply to their PA?
Update on Turbosound;
You are right, their website looks like they may be o.k. and they are British too!

I don't know Turbosound.
I'd certainly consider ATC if I could stand the price. There are units that are rugged to support road travel and yet are excellent for stereo and studio work.
Good luck.

Not a bad idea. I would need to look into their efficiency, but as my Crown macro-reference amp is rated at about 1200 Watts into 2 ohms I should be o.k.
I could look at the Wilmslow ATC kits as they are relatively cheap here.
